PlayStation Studios Has More Than 25 Games in Development for PS5 - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 01 June 2021 / 2,790 Views

The PlayStation 5 has been a success for Sony as the company has shipped 7.8 million PlayStation 5 consoles as of March 31, 2021. This is 200,000 more units than Sony shipped of the PlayStation 4 by the end of March 2014.

The head of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst in an interview with Wired revealed there are over 25 first-party games in development for the PlayStation 5. Nearly half of these games are based on brand new IPs.

"There’s an incredible amount of variety originating from different regions," said Hulst. "Big, small, different genres."

Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan said the company is trying its hardest to increase production of the PlayStation 5 to meet demand.

"We’re working as hard as we can to ameliorate that situation," said Ryan. "We see production ramping up over the summer and certainly into the second half of the year, and we would hope to see some sort of return to normality in terms of the balance between supply and demand during that period."

Upcoming first-party games for the PS5 include Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Horizon Forbidden West, a new God of War sequel, and Gran Turismo 7.

At that rate they could release a game a quarter pretty consistently. I like the sound of all those new IPs, too.

Skip the hollidays. 2 in summer. Theres so much stuff already in the hollidays and summer empty.

But they (game publishers) assume people are doing other things during the summer and less likely to buy games. It's mostly true for the mainstream users.

On the other hand, winter has people inside a lot more time. Combine that with holiday spending. That's why the glut of games happens.

I agree that a more balanced release schedule would be nice, but the situation is unlikely to change.

Aside from release of a console. I dont remember sony releasing their big games during the holidays. Last year alone we had last of us and ghost of tsushima during summer. Maybe sony is changing things up. Seems to be paying off.

Typical Northern hemisphere elitist behavior, it's bad enough you ruined cartography and condemned people in the better hemisphere to a life of upside down map reading by declaring North is up and South is down , you also nicked most of the world's land mass and did we say a word in protest no, but now you have crossed the line and want to interfere with our summer games release schedule.
Your lucky that were not sure what seasonal clothing we should pack or we would be on our way down North now to sort this out, but keep it up and you could end up having an indecisive naked mob at your door.

I'll believe it when I see it. Of course, given the past few years has been full of exclusives and new IPs that do well and are well loved, I do have faith this is true. But in the interest of fairness, I'll wait to buy into this when I actually see it and play the games for myself. 25 exclusives, over half of which are new IP is a fairly lofty goal. Easy to get over-hyped.

This VG Chartz article needs some clarification as to what Herman Hurst said and was referring to. He did NOT say there are 25 first-party games in production; he said that there are 25 PlayStation Studios games in development. PS Studios doesn't necessarily mean first-party games from Sony-owned studios; in fact, Sony has already published two PS Studios/PS5 games since launch not from their own developers. Sackboy: A Big Adventure is made by Sumo Digital (NOT owned by Sony) and Returnal is made by Housemarque (again, NOT owned by Sony). Add in Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Demon's Souls, Destruction AllStars, MLB The Show 21, and R&C: Rift Apart in a few weeks, and Sony is already at seven PS Studios games on PS5 already within the first eight months. So, thinking about another 25 coming out over the course of the next 4 years probably doesn't sound so big or crazy.

Well he did say big and small games. So they might not all be AAA.

That's kind of weird to hear after the recent comments about focusing on blockbuster games. But hopefully Jim Ryan doesn't know what he's talking about.

This is a lie since Jason "trusthworthy" Scheirer said Sony is only doing AAA sequels.

  • 0
DonFerrari mjk45 (on 14 May 2021)

7 I mean count the titles from 2021 to 2027. But if we count the switch, Series and PC versions we could then say all the 25 games are versions of MLB until the end of gen.

Based on the initiative which is sony taking, exclusive games, new ips, while being the forefront of gaming innovation, PlayStation 5 will surpass 100 mil units like PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 1, they could even reach 100 mil units within 5 years.

  • +5
AFattyGamer imparanoic (on 12 May 2021)

I truly believe the PS5 could do a 100 million in 5 years as well. They just have to sort out those stock issues which hopefully their 6nm chip redesign for next year helps but I doubt it.

  • 0
DonFerrari AFattyGamer (on 12 May 2021)

they are outpacing PS4 and PS2 so far, so even with the stock issues for first year 100M shouldn't be a problem.

  • +2
AFattyGamer DonFerrari (on 12 May 2021)

Yup its looking really good for PS5 my man, 100 million I say late 2024 early 2025 PS5 should be at that sales goal :) Even with global shortages of semiconductors PS5 is selling extremely well. My Webull portfolio shows it could be better but hey I'll take what I can from Sony lol

  • +1
SvenTheTurkey imparanoic (on 12 May 2021)

In which way are they leading innovation in the industry? It's great that they're finding success with the ps5, but it's basically a super ps4. The days of innovation are gone. We basically just have laptops without a battery to put under the tv like last gen. They're getting a lot out of the hardware, but there isn't much innovative or cutting edge about it.

In terms of exclusives, they all have exclusives. So there isn't anything unique there either.

  • -2
imparanoic SvenTheTurkey (on 12 May 2021)

leading innovation as in implementing haptic feedback that no other system can allow you 'feel' the action (switch had the potentital, not really implemented), Tempest 3d audio as standard, the fastest ssd available for any video game console which changes the way games are designed, ie, ratchet and clank drift apart

This statement doesn't mean very much, because there are a ton of games that enter development and never make it to market. It would be more meaningful to hear how many games they have that are in full development and expected to launch in the next couple of years.

This is beautiful news. When Mr. Jim Ryan stated Sony has been quietly investing in their 1st party studios he wasn't lying ;') at least half of those 25 games are new IP's so at the very least 10 of those should be new experiences. Lets go Sony! I want to see more graphical showcases for PS5.

  • -3
AFattyGamer Runa216 (on 12 May 2021)

You say that as if that's a negative. The better Microsoft does this gen the more that causes Sony to better. Vice - versa ... That's like ... the basics of competition bro. I want Sony to continue to do good and not get non complacent and Microsoft will push Sony to do that. I hold true on my positions and I don't switch them up. Unlike others on this website.

  • +2
Runa216 AFattyGamer (on 12 May 2021)

But sony has been doing great even when Xbox isn't even coming close to matching it in sales or hype or cultural relevance. Xbox One sold less than half what PS4 sold, with fewer exclusives or innovations, while Sony has had some of their best years and best sales and best critical reception ever. Your assertions about the market and competition do not mesh with reality. Great theories but they're not coming true at all so you need to stop repeating it

  • -3
AFattyGamer Runa216 (on 12 May 2021)

But they do. Well aware of the sales gap with Xbox One and PS4. And currently with Series X and PS5 it's about 2:1 however both Microsoft and Sony have stock issues. They're both selling whatever units they're able to produce. So the next 2 or 3 years should be more telling on the market when MS and Sony can satisfy the market better. And Microsoft Series X and S is outselling Xbox One same launch periods aligned according to VGChartz. You don't mention Xbox One was arguably Microsoft's worse launch for their console ever. Even today Microsoft is still trying to recover from the failures of the One. They knew they needed more in house Studios to match Sony so they purchase Bethesda. Microsoft believes a Netflix subscription model for digital access to games is the future so they invest in GamePass. Mr. Jim Ryan literally says they're working on a counter to Game Pass as they're paying attention to their competition so they come out with a Video Pass still in beta of course but Sony is seeing what Microsoft is doing and vice versa. Microsoft leaked documents of their reviews for TLOU2 saying that's the type of bar Xbox needs to reach. Again these aren't theories these are literally happening right now in real time. Also I haven't given Microsoft props in months besides for my last comment just now. So not sure what you mean by repeating the same thing. I mostly come here now for the Sony news, sale charts, and some game reviews. I haven't even been in Xbox articles as of late.

Azzanation AFattyGamer (on 13 May 2021)

XB1 is not Microsofts worst selling console. Its their most profitable consoles. The OG Xbox is the most unsuccessful console in terms of profit and the 360 is the 3rd worse profitable console in history (PS3 is 2nd). This is excluding Live Subscription profits of course which is what carried the brand through the 3 generations.

  • 0
DonFerrari AFattyGamer (on 13 May 2021)

X1 was "the most successful launch in xbox history" from MS themselves saying it until it was near 10M shipped and they stopped talking sales.

  • -1
Azzanation DonFerrari (on 13 May 2021)

What exactly is your point? They stopped talking about sales when they were restructuring their brand. And after the restructuring, they continue to not talk about hardware sales a generation after.

  • 0
DonFerrari Azzanation (on 13 May 2021)

My point was that AFattyGamer said X1 was the worst console launch ever. When it was the best MS console launch ever, so we don't even need to consider several other companies major launch failures to conclude X1 launch wasn't the biggest fail ever. Again by MS own admission it was their most successful launch ever. So you were responding to what exactly?

  • +4
Azzanation DonFerrari (on 14 May 2021)

I was unsure why you brought up the "not mentioning sales figures". Seems like we had a similar response to AFattyGamer then.

  • 0
DonFerrari Azzanation (on 14 May 2021)

Because after MS stopped sharing sales figures we can't be sure of how much X1 was selling, but anyway that was after launch window.

  • 0
Azzanation Runa216 (on 13 May 2021)

To be fair, part of the reason the PS4 sold well was due to the lack of competition with even Nintendo failing at the gate. Lack of competition means customers have fewer choices and will buy into the only solid option. If the XB1 and WiiU came out strong, the PS4 would have sold less and the other two would have increased in sales. Its the Seesaw effect.

kazuyamishima Azzanation (on 13 May 2021)

If the PS5 has more “competition”, why is selling more than PS4?

Too early to tell. Can't judge a whole generation based on early adoptors. Also scruplers help push PS5 and XSX sales.

Increasing production just gives more units to scalpers.

  • -10
Trentonater Random_Matt (on 12 May 2021)

Scalpers can turn a profit only because demand exceeds production. This is compounded by the fact that stores are reliant on online storefronts at the moment which are susceptible to bots.

  • +3
mjk45 Trentonater (on 12 May 2021)

also its not in Sony's interest to feed scalpers the hardware is sold at a loss and software makes it back and they are hit from two sides scalpers don't buy games and gamers paying an extra premium for hardware means less money left over for games.

  • +1
DonFerrari Random_Matt (on 12 May 2021)

Would you suggest they halt production so scalpers can''t buy?
