Mass Effect Legendary Edition Runs Up to 120 FPS on Xbox Series X, Up to 60 FPS on All Other Consoles - News

With Electronic Arts releasing Mass Effect Legendary Edition next week, the Publisher has revealed how well the game performs on consoles. The game will come with two available modes: one favors quality, while the other favors framerate.

The Xbox Series X is the only console in framerate mode that is capable of running up to 120 frames per second (FPS). While in this mode the game will be in 1440p resolution. The PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, Xbox One X, and PlayStation 4 Pro in this mode will run up to 60 FPS at 1440p resolution. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will run up to 60 FPS at 1080p.

The quality mode for the game on the Xbox Series X and PS5 will run up to 60 FPS at 4K UHD. On the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro it will run up to 30 FPS at 4K UHD, and on the PS4 and Xbox One it will run up to 30 FPS at 1080p.

EA did add that players on PC can experience up to 240 FPS and supports refresh rates up to 240 Hz. PC players will be able to change the graphics options to make a preferred balance of graphics and performance.

Electronic Arts does note "consistency of target framerate & resolution is dependent on platform. The more powerful the hardware the more consistently you will experience the specified target framerate & resolution."

Mass Effect Legendary Edition will launch for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam and Origin on May 14. The game will also run on the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 via backward compatibility.

Pretty strange that the PS4 Pro and PS5 both target the same resolution and framerate in performance mode despite the latter console being significantly more powerful.

Doesn't really matter in the long run coz not everybody has a tv that can run 120fps right or I'm I wrong most tvs can run it? Haha

Not sure why anyone would want lower resolution and higher FPS in a single player game. I'll take 4k60 FPS all day. If this was COD that would be a different story. Then again I'll be on PC so I'm not sure what my FPS will be.

I believe the PS5 hasn't yet added support for 1440p output. Seems like a completely bizarre decision to deny PS5 players a 120hz mode to hit 1440p when it will downsample to 1080p anyway.

So no frame rate mode for PS5. Oh well, I'll me on ultra wide.

It’s a bit of a shame that PS5 doesn’t have the 120fps mode for this one but understandable given the BC method that Sony uses. All in all, it’s still going to be great playing this in 4K/60fps on PS5 regardless. And honestly, Sony doesn’t even really need the extra mode because the majority of sales are going to be on Playstation anyways. The ME games were always back compat on Xbox to begin with so you’re going to get lesser sales there but on Playstation they were locked to the PS3. Now you have 116 million PS4 systems out there and a PS5 install base with over a 3 million console lead and growing who haven’t played the ME series in 10 years or at all on the PS.

The PS5 lacking a 120fps mode has nothing to do with Sonys way of handling backwards compatibility. Thats only true when we're dealing with a last gen (PS4/XB1) title that a developer has a patch to upgrade its framrate on the PS5/XSX consoles. Because the PS5 treats a PS4 title and a PS5 title as separate apps, developers cant just patch in a framerate update to a PS4 title, theyd have to make a new PS5 app which is more work.

But that isnt the case with Mass Effect. Theres a last gen and current gen version being released. PS5 doesnt have a 120fps mode because its not as powerful thats all.

I think maybe you should take a step back and do some research on these topics before speaking on them. Maybe watch a few Digital Foundry videos on PS5 titles that play at 120fps.

Im not trying to hate. Im just telling you the reality of the situation. The situation you described is only true for when there is no current gen version and developers are instead wanting to patch in a framerate boost for when you play a PS4 title on your PS5 in bc mode. But this isnt the case here. Theres an actual current gen version and an actual last gen version. Therefore theres no bc involved, meaning the difference between the xsx and ps5 versions is purely down to their different power levels.

You can love your PS5 and still admit XSX is more powerful bro. Relax its not that deep.

Also, Sony can want for 120fps mode, but I'm not sure his logic holds up with them not wanting to do so "because of sales lead". It's that their system cannot do 120fps for all games, every step of the way, as DF and other benchmarkers have shown us.

I definitely understand you’re not hating and regardless of console bias or not I can also admit that XSX is the more powerful machine by pure specs. However, I think the difference in our understanding of the situation is the “next gen” and “current gen” skus. There is no native “next gen” version of this. Bioware and EA have already confirmed this and the very article you are posting in reads as “Mass Effect Legendary Edition will launch for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam and Origin on May 14. The game will also run on the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 via backward compatibility. “

Youre right. Just looked it up. There is no current gen SKU. My bad.

Soo true! No way the ps5 could handle mass effect A120fps.
Only the nioh collection can do it...

That is not what digital foundry said. The ps5 version is the ps4 ro version.

that's actually a good point, people keep on blaming the companies for not doing a dual release, but there might be large costs to do so, double certification and licensing fees
