PS5 vs Xbox Series X|S vs Switch Launch Sales Comparison Through Week 6 - Sales

This weekly mini-series compares the aligned launch sales of the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
It should be noted the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S had a worldwide launch, while the PlayStation 5 launch was split over the course of two weeks. Also, the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017, while the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S launched during the holidays in November 2020.
PS5 Vs. Xbox Series X|S vs Switch Global:
- PS5: 4,192,807

- XSX|S: 2,242,928
Through the first six weeks available worldwide the PlayStation 5 is ahead of the Switch and Xbox Series X|S by a fair margin. The PS5 is ahead of the Switch by 1.70 million units and is 1.95 million units ahead of the Xbox Series X|S.
The PS5 has sold 4.19 million in six weeks worldwide, while the Switch sold 2.50 million units and the Xbox Series X|S 2.24 million units.
Looking at the marketshare through six weeks, the PlayStation 5 currently leads. The PS5 has a 46.9 percent marketshare, the Switch sits at 28.0 percent, and the Xbox Series X|S at 25.1 percent.
The Switch didn't reach current PS5 sales until week 19.
PS5 Vs. Xbox Series X|S vs Switch US:

Through the first six weeks available in the US the PlayStation 5 is ahead of the Switch and Xbox Series X|S. The PS5 is ahead of the Xbox Series X|S by 486,350 units and is 749,703 units ahead of the Switch.
The PS5 has sold 1.72 million in six weeks in the US, while the Xbox Series X|S sold 1.24 million units and the Switch 0.97 million units.
Looking at the marketshare through six weeks, the PlayStation 5 currently leads. The PS5 has a 43.8 percent marketshare, the Xbox Series X|S sits at 31.5 percent, and the Switch at 24.7 percent.
The Switch didn't reach current PS5 sales until week 21 and current Xbox Series X|S sales until week 11.
PS5 Vs. Xbox Series X|S vs Switch Europe (5 weeks):
- PS5: 1,496,028
- Switch: 660,698
- XSX|S: 589,363
The PlayStation 5 has been available for one week less than the Xbox Series X|S in Europe. After five weeks the PS5 is ahead of the Switch by 835,330 units and is 906,665 units ahead of the Xbox Series X|S.
The PS5 has sold 1.50 million in five weeks in Europe, while the Switch sold 0.66 million units and the Xbox Series X|S 0.59 million units.
Looking at the marketshare through five weeks, the PlayStation 5 currently leads. The PS5 has a 54.5 percent marketshare, the Switch sits at 24.0 percent, and the Xbox Series X|S at 21.5 percent.
The Switch didn't reach current PS5 sales until week 25.
PS5 Vs. Xbox Series X|S vs Switch Japan:
- Switch: 607,057

Through the first six weeks available in Japan the Switch is ahead of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S by a wide margin. The Switch is ahead of the PS5 by 363,123 units and is 575,000 units ahead of the Xbox Series X|S.
The Switch has sold 607,057 units in six weeks in Japan, while the PS5 has sold 243,934 units, and the Xbox Series X|S 32,057 units.
Looking at the marketshare through six weeks, the Switch currently leads. The Switch has a 68.8 percent marketshare, the PS5 sits at 27.6 percent, and the Xbox Series X|S at 3.6 percent.

It's clear that switch will overtake PS5 at some point and PS5 will again overtake switch and so on and so forth for a few years. If PS5 can't even manage that, it's gonna be worse than the PS4 for sure. 2020 is the 4th year of the switch and that is when it will become clear whether PS5 can match the switch. Also if PS5 can manage to not loose the lead at all in the first year, then it's something special but I don't see any reason as of yet for PS5 to be that special
Just as a reference the PS4 had sold 3.7M units during the first 6 weeks. But I think this time around the situation is a little bit different. January should shed some light as to how much of an impact production is having. If PS5 is able to sell everything it produces like it has been doing, then it will probably gain an important lead over the NS and PS4. But no matter what happens, it will take many years to really understand how well a console will sell.
Switch is a last gen console
strong start for PS5 for sure, if it keeps the same momentum in long term, then it will outsold the PS4 for sure
I'd imagine the PS5 will stay ahead in the lead in 2021 with these same time comparisons. Sony needs to produce more supply, 18 million is not cutting it lol
That depends if the demand stays so high. It could just be that it's so high due to the lockdowns and go down quickly if that wanes. The same is true of course for the Switch and the XS, so we'll have to see how it goes forward this spring
I agree, there is a big question about how this year will compare to last, January is usually a good month, so maybe February will be more indicative.
