Games Will Look Photo Realistic in 10 Years, Says Take-Two CEO - News

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick speaking at the UBS Global TMT Virtual Conference and transcribed by GamesIndustry says developers will have the option to make games look photo realistic in 10 years.

"I'm guessing [Take-Two's] business in ten years looks very different than it does today in the same way that it looks very different today than it did ten years ago when there was no mobile business and no recurrent consumer spending," Zelnick said.

"And I can't quite say what that will involve, but I think what you're going to see is technology will allow our creative folks to do things they've never been able to do before, including make games that look exactly like live-action.

Games Will Look Photo Realistic in 10 Years, According to Take-Two CEO

"Some of what we do now looks a lot like live-action, but it's still animation. In 10 years, you'll have the option if you want to make things that look completely realistic, all done inside a computer, never mind all the other advances technology will enable.

"All of those things lead me to believe there will be massive moves in our business -- many of which we can't entirely predict -- massive growth in the business, and there will be a lot of dynamic opportunity both in terms of what we can do creatively and what we can do on the business side to exploit that creativity."

We've been saying this since the N64 era.

Yeah, I don't see this happening personally. We've reached the point of major diminishing returns now. Gen 9 graphics are a smaller leap over gen 8 graphics than gen 8 graphics were over gen 7 graphics. Even the latest realistic CGI movies and cutscenes don't look truly photorealistic yet, and those are rendered on whole banks of high end computers over the course of several days or weeks. I'd say we're more like 20 years from photorealistic real-time graphics, if not more.

I have already seen photo realism. It's sad for him to talk about this in " the next 10 years' the last thing we need is more emphasis on graphcis going forward. There is more important things that need addressing going into the future.
