Psyonix Explains Why Rocket League Doesn't Run at 120 FPS on PS5, While it Does on Xbox Series X|S - News

Psyonix recently announced Rocket League would be able to run at 120 frames per second on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S after they release an update, but on the PlayStation 5 it would run at checkerboard 4K resolution and 60 frames per second.

Psyonix's senior communications manager Stephanie Thoensen in a statement to PushSquare explains why the game is stuck at 60 frames per second on the PS5.

This is due to how the PS5 handles backwards compatible games. On the Xbox Series X and S, a small patch is all that is required, however, it would require a lot more wok on the PS5.

"Right now we have nothing further to share on additional PS5 plans, but can shed some more light on the why," said Thoensen. "Our team’s main focus this year was our recent free to play transition, and updating major features like our Tournaments system. Due to this we had to make tough decisions on what else we could achieve.

"Enabling 120hz on Xbox Series X|S is a minor patch, but enabling it on PS5 requires a full native port due to how backwards compatibility is implemented on the console, and unfortunately wasn’t possible due to our focus elsewhere."

I must be oversimplifying this but, uncap the frame rate. We have many cases of games with uncapped frame rates running at 60fps with NO PATCH.

They just don't want to spend time uncapping the frame rate and testing it.

In a nutshell, Xbox's BC is better. This isn't a port and PS5 is bottlenecked because how it handles BC.

Yeah I'm pretty sure if you unlock the framerate of the PS4 version, it would ran at 120Hz with no issue on PS5

Not to dissimilar to dmc 5 really. Ran into an issue with the porting process and decided what they got was good enough.

Sure. The difference being DMC5 made a new release with a lot of patching, psyonix basically didn't do anything.
