Publisher 2K Games and developer Firaxis Games have announced the Sid Meier’s Civilization VI New Frontier Pass. It will cost $39.99 and release for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC. It will also release for the mobile version when it releases later this year.

The new season pass will add eight new civilizations, nine new leaders, six new game modes, and more to the strategy game. The DLC for the season pass will release from May 21, 2020 through March 2021.

"It’s been four years since we first announced Civilization VI, and the support from fans and players has been overwhelming," said Firaxis Games franchise lead designer Ed Beach. "After two giant expansions in ‘Rise and Fall’ and ‘Gathering Storm,’ four years’ worth of balance updates and more, Civilization VI has grown into the flagship title for the series."

Firaxis Games lead game designer Anton Strenger added, "We’re very excited to be adding even more content to Civilization VI, ensuring longtime players and franchise newcomers have something fresh to look forward to in the months to come. By delivering new content on a regularly scheduled basis, we’ll have more opportunities than ever with the ‘New Frontier Pass’ to connect with our community as we actively develop and deliver content."

The notion of a season pass for Civ games does not bode well. I really don't want Civ to turn into a GaaS style game.

On the other hand, Civilization game recently have really benefited from expansions, so this might not hurt the game either. Not that the game modes are needed though... And no, I'm not liking the trend anyway.

You know, I'm all for more content, but putting everything behind a paywall? I already payed for 2 expansions and the game can't even run properly half the time on Switch (game crashing repeatedly in later eras of the game) making it really frustrating to play. Couldn't they work on fixing the game on Switch before releasing new content? Just my two cents...
