Digital Versions of The Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2 No Longer Available on Consoles - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 03 January 2017 / 6,755 Views

It looks like the digital versions of The Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2 have been sliced away from online console gaming storefronts, including the PlayStation Network, Xbox Store (although The Amazing Spider-Man 2 can still be purchased for Xbox 360), and Wii-U eShop. You can still grab them digitally from Steam, however.

As Hardcore Gamer speculates, this is likely due to licenses for the games expiring, but it comes at an interesting time given that Insomniac Games is working on a recently-announced PS4 Spider-Man reboot.

Freaking Marvel and their bs! They did the same thing with Marvel vs capcom and Deadpool couple years back.

Isn't the digital age glorious? We should totally ditch physical media guys, it'll be awesome!

Then the day comes when your physical media is broken, scratched, missing or just doesn't work with the current setup.

Yes but if you are actually careful, optical discs can last an absurdly long time. And even if damaged or lost, I can still find it used. The all digital concept's most obvious flaw is that publishers can just scrub a game from existence mostly, at least via official channels. Or a bunch of prick lawyers can do it, as seen here. And of course many aspects of the right of first purchase go out the window as well.

Yeah pubs can scrub from their servers, but they can't scrub what I have backed up. If they revoke access to said game, despite the fact that you currently possess and own it, then the same rule would also apply to the physical media as well.

I know that both media formats have their pros and cons, but I'm not going to toss away all my digital games and go back to physical over something like this.

I have no issue with the status quo, physical and digital. I have an issue with people who are blindly following these publishers to the all digital future. Because the existence and ease of access to physical media is the main reason publishers aren't colossal pricks with regards to wiping servers of old games to force new purchases. The fact is that physical provides a very important foil to digital that keeps it stable.

And actually no, the same rule does not apply to physical media as digital. Publishers can't revoke your right to do as you wish with the copy you purchased. The reason they can be such dicks with regards to digital is that you don't buy an actual product, you basically pay for the right to make a copy of a file they have. And they have more leeway to dictate what you can do with that then they have to dictate what can be done with physical copies.

I don't think that every single pub out there is going to pull the ol evil corp style plan where every game is wiped and every other game is slapped up for a re-purchase. We've already had physical "remasters" of games in recent years if that's anything to go by for a re-purchase.

It actually does, because accessing said content that is online based, or when the system you play it on requires an update, then the same rule does in fact apply. You do not actually even own the physical game, you are merely paying for the license to use it in the first place. This changed nearly 15 years ago. YOu can absolutely do what you physically want to the physical disk, but what's on the disk isn't yours by way of license, you merely paid to use it, nothing more nothing less.
