See Some of the Original Xbox Controller Designs - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 27 June 2016 / 5,869 Views

Seamus Blackley, one of the original people who worked on the Xbox, has released concept art of varying designs for the original Xbox controller.

The designs are from November 1999. That is four months before the announcement of the console and two years before its 2001 launch.

Yep, they would have had a VMU device like the Dreamcast but I guess those got scrapped since they went with a internal HDD instead.

The original Xbox controller still has 2 memory card holes on the top of it, the VMU style devices from the console were not dropped because of the Memory card portion of them (since that still exists in the finished product) but because the dreamcast was a disaster and failed to use the VMU for anything other than taking your Chao out on a walk... if you happened to own a watch battery farm.

@Totally forgot about the memory card slots in the original Xbox controller probably because I never bought a memory card for it since it had a HDD.

Oh, I had a few mates who had Xbox's so I had the memory sticks for it for moving around our created parks and skaters for THPS3-4 :) also the original Xbox live headset clipped into those ports, well one of them. Loved the OG Xbox so much.

Looks like they tried to copy the Dreamcast controller

That's because Xbox is essentially the successor to dreamcast.

All of those look extremely bad. Glad they didn't went with any of those. The original XBox controller is actually pretty good both the fat and slim design the only major flaw where the tiny black and white buttons.

When I think back to the days of Halo one multiplayer, I feel bad for what me and mates used to refer to those two buttons as... But thankfully they removed the 2 racial buttons on the X360!

just as bad as those N64 controllers

and the Duke controller beat all those. I have to say that the original s controller that came after duke is really good

it's pretty much the design of the Xbox360 pad we've been using for over 10 years now still, only main difference is having Black/White buttons instead of LB/RB, shape and layout is almost exactly the X360 pad.

Oh and the Xbox Logo on the controller S is just a logo, I recently tricked someone into trying to turn on my original Xbox by pressing that logo... for like 2 mins. was funny out watching them try to jam it in.
