PS4 vs Xbox One vs Wii U Japan Lifetime Sales – April 2016 Update - Sales

Welcome to the latest edition of the ‘PS4 vs Xbox One vs Wii U Japan’ article. This series compares the monthly and lifetime sales of the 8th generation of home consoles - the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Wii U.

 

Looking at the total sales of the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Wii U in in Japan for April shows how quickly the PlayStation 4 has been catching up to the Wii U in 2016.

The Wii U has sold 3.15 million units lifetime, the PlayStation 2.74 million units, and the Xbox One 66,973 units.

Taking a look at the marketshare, the Wii U has a 53 percent market share, the PlayStation 4 sits at 46 percent, and the Xbox One just one percent.

Wii U Total Sales: 3,153,234

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 2,739,081

Xbox One Total Sales: 66,973

 

The PlayStation 4 outsold the Wii U for a fourth straight month. The PlayStation 4 outsold the Wii U by 64,941 units and the Xbox One by 92,193 units. The Wii U outsold the Xbox One by 27,252.

When you compare monthly sales to a year ago the PlayStation 4 is up, while the Wii U and Xbox One are down. The PlayStation 4 is up 22,208 units, the Wii U is down 13,190 units, and the Xbox One is down 1,000.

Looking at market share for the month, the PlayStation 4 managed to achieve a massive 87 percent. The Wii U accounted for 23 percent of the consoles sold, and the Xbox One accounted for less than one percent.

Wii U Monthly Sales: 27,769

PlayStation 4 Monthly Sales: 92,710

Xbox One Monthly Sales: 517

Xbox has always had an uphill battle in the Japanese Market but these numbers are worse than the worst case scenario

It really is an American console. If it wasn't for Halo or Forza, I bet European sales would be similar.

Seems like it can have PS4 over WiiU by this year in Japan.

I'll put the sales into perspective. Its current LTD is approx. 66K, and it's been selling 50-100 units a week lately. That means at the current rate it's selling, it would take around 179-359 years to reach 1 million LTD. Of course that doesn't take into account possibles spikes in sales due to exclusive game releases, but that really won't make much of a difference. Even reaching 100K units at its current pace could take around 6-13 years.

By the holidays I believe PS4 will overtake the Wii U
