Nintendo NX to Launch with a 'Solid Lineup' and Not Sold at a Loss

Nintendo NX to Launch with a 'Solid Lineup' and Not Sold at a Loss - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 02 May 2016 / 11,862 Views

Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima has released some details on its upcoming NX console during the investor briefing Q&A for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2016.

The NX will launch with a "solid lineup" of games and the strong software will continue post launch. The console will also not be sold at a loss.

"You are correct about needing a solid lineup of software," said Kimishima when asked about the launch lineup. "One of the reasons for choosing the launch timing that we did is so that the software lineup will be ready in time for the hardware launch. Not only at launch, but we also need to be able to continuously release titles after launch. We are planning for this to be a platform that consumers can enjoy for a long time.

"Next, about how we are looking at cost, we are not thinking of launching the hardware at a loss. When Wii U was launched, the yen was very strong. I am assuming that situation will not repeat itself. Selling at a loss at launch would not support the business, so we are keeping that mind in developing NX."

If they manage to create a decent launch lineup and keep a consistent stream of games througout the first year, it will be an improvement over the WiiU already. The WiiU droughts were really harmful (ands still are).

That's a big "if" but god I hope they can pull it off!

  • +5

Well, it is what they must do. If the NX's first year is like the WiiU's, the system is going to collapse even faster due to people's mistrust on the console.

Everything is "if" about the NX.

I continue to pray to God Almighty that Nintendo knows what they're doing with NX.

I think they've seen the writing on the wall: their mobile gaming needs to adapt to the arrival of smartphones thus we're only getting NX and not a 4DS or something like that. Nintendo's been stretched thin between 3DS and WiiU so focusing on just one platform should help them address game droughts.

I hope Nintendo lives up to those statements.

This. After the 3DS and Wii U I don't trust them. Going to wait before deciding to go iNX or out.

Well at this stage its normal to wait. We only have such vague ideas about the NX. Like how it will have the new Zelda.

Metroid Nintendo. It's the only way

Solid launch line-up - Great.

Not sold at a loss - Could mean either not as powerful as some people think it will be, or it will be more expensive than some think; knowing Nintendo, the former is more likely.

"Not sold at a loss", Either they will release an underpowered console or overpriced again..

Does not need to mean, actually Wii U was only Nintendo console that was sold at loss at launch.

If they're aiming to match PS4/XBone levels of power, the tech is cheaper now that it was two-three years ago, so it's not out of reach to get a system like that at a profit.

We will have to wait to find out. It's nintendo we are talking about and they have trained their fanbase to buy overpriced things so it's a possibility for me. But you are right about tech being cheaper now

Because the're not taking a loss on each unit doesn't mean they will be making massive profits on each unit either, The aim could be to sell at around production costs or a few $ profit to cover currency fluctuations, One of the biggest reason they made losses with the Wii U was due to the Yen/USD situation

It's actually more to do with the ethics of sourcing their materials.
Nintendo has a bit of a reputation for not giving a damn about where it gets its raw materials from, (wore torn regions and slave mines. that sort of thing)
It's a complex issue, but both MS and Sony have made a transparent effort to pay a few cents extra for materials ethically sound in their origin.
I love Nintendo, but they've historically been uncaring of such issues.

I am very interested about this, if the console is more powerful than the Wii U I wonder what price they will sell it so there is no loss.

I'll be the judge of that.

If anyone is in a learning mood and is curious as to how Nintendo can always avoid selling at a loss, well... the answer is a little bleak.

I really don't know what to say at this point. It's all fairly elementary. What is needed is well known. Will Nintendo hitting all notes be enough though? Launching "mid-cycle" allows Sony and MS to unveil their console successors shortly after the NX launch. Nintendo is in an unenviable position.

What's this "logic" bs, Nintendo? You're talking nonsense right now, this is not like you, but I suppose that as long New Super Mario Bros NX is part of that opening line up it'll be a sign that everything's fine and nothing has changed for the worse.

PR talk. Nobody wants to sell at a loss and everybody wants it to have a solid launch line-up, it's pretty obvious that nobody would market a console saying "The line-up is weak and we'll sell the consoles at a loss." Because that would drop the company's share value and scare potential investors away.

Cyran -Ack!- (on 03 May 2016)

Sony and Microsoft always sell there consoles at a loss when it first release a console. They rely on games/PlayStation Plus/additional hardware (extra controllers etc) to make profits early on. It usually take ~ a year before they start profiting from the actual console.

-Ack!- -Ack!- (on 03 May 2016)

That's not my point. The point is that Nintendo wants to keep their stock prices high. Therefore they'll say anything to please their investors as do other companies including Sony and Microsoft. What is the truth is irrelevant, Sony would never admit selling at a loss until it no longer matters like "Yeah we sold at a loss a year ago, but now the manufacturing costs have dropped." sound much better than saying "We're currently selling at a loss." see where I'm getting at?

That made me laugh:)

If it doesn't have a unique gimmick and tries to sell at the same price as X1 and PS4, its gonna fail.

Jranation Mr Puggsly (on 02 May 2016)

Maybe they can have the "unique gimmick" later on its life? Like the kinect, PSVR. Basically like peripherals. (I think thats what you call them)

Mr Puggsly Mr Puggsly (on 03 May 2016)

Xbox 360 was a success well before Kinect. It can't just be another standard game consoles and get attention, especially given the Nintendo has struggled to get significant 3rd party support.

Underpowered hardware confirmed.

  • -7

A system not being sold at a loss does not necessarily mean that it will be underpowered. The Wii U was sold at a loss and yet it was underpowered compared to the Xbox One and PS4.
