Overview

It is a good week for debuts with five games debuting in the top 15. The Xbox 360 passes the 53 million mark and the DS passes 147 million. Software milestone this week: Just Dance 2 (Wii) reaches 7 million sold, Zumba Fitness (Wii) reaches 1 million sold and Homefront (X360) also reaches 1 million. Two games sold over 200,000, six sold over 100,000 and the top 17 sold over 50,000.

Worldwide Hardware

Hardware

Week on week sales are up for the home consoles, PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360, and down for the handhelds, the DS, PSP and 3DS. The 3DS is this week’s top platform with sales of 181,000 which is down 68,000 (-27%).  The PlayStation 3 is the top home console this week with sales of 146,000 up just 3,000 (2%). The Xbox 360 with a bigger increase passes the Wii for this week’s sales. It sold 126,000, up 11,000 (10%), while the Wii sold 121,000 up 5,000 (4%). The DS with 3DS on the market continues to falter in weekly sales as it drops another 8,000 (-7%) to 106,000 sold. The PSP is dropping even faster than the DS as it falls 17,000 (-21%) to 63,000 sold. Total sales decreased week on week by 74,000 to 743,000.

Year on year sales are up slightly for the Xbox 360 and down for every other platform. The Xbox 360 is up just 3,000 (2%) year on year. By percent the PlayStation 3 has the smallest drop down 22% or 42,000. The Wii is down 45% or 100,000, the PSP is down 46% or 54,000, and the DS is down 65% or 194,000. Total sales are down 206,000 (-22%).

Hardware Home Consoles

After six straight weeks if continued weekly drops, all three home consoles are up slightly this week. The slow decreases in the weekly sales is normal for this time of year as video game sales are the lowest during the summer and the spring is the second lowest season of the year.

 Hardware Handhelds

After a big drop in sales last week after launching in America, the 3DS takes a much smaller drop this week and remains ahead of its predecessor and the PSP for four weeks. The DS drops for a fifth straight week and the PSP for a second week.

Worldwide Software

Five games debuted in the top 40, the same as last week. Dai-2-Ji Super Robot Taisen Z: Hakai-hen (PSP) debuts at the top with sales of 300,000. The game debuted in Japan with no plans to be released elsewhere.

Michael Jackson: The Experience (X360) debuts at number four with sales of 105,000. The game debuted in America and EMEAA, with no plans to be released in Japan.

Peo Yakyuu Spirits 2011 (PS3) debuts at number seven with sales of 87,000. The PSP version debuts at number 11 with sales of 73,000. The game debuted in Japan with no plans to be releases anywhere else.

LEGO Battles: Ninjago (DS) debuts at number 13 with sales of 65,000. The game debuted in America and EMEAA with no plans to be released in Japan.

Persona 2: Tsumi (PSP) debuts at number 14 with sales of 62,000. The game debuted in Japan with no plans to be released elsewhere.

Other games in the top 10 that are not debuts include Pokémon Black / White Version (DS) at number two sold 211,000. Kinect Adventures! (X360) is at number three with sales of 112,000. Wii Sports is at number five with sales of 103,000.

Wii Sports resort is at number six, with sales of 101,000. Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 Professional (DS) is at number eight with sales of 84,000. Just Dance 2 (Wii) is at number nine with sales of 82,000. Wii Fit Plus rounds out the top ten with sales of 74,000.

Software

Week on week software after two weeks of decreases, bounce back this week. The Wii is up 141,000 (2%) to 1.77 million games sold.  The Xbox 360 has the biggest increase for the home consoles, up 263,000 with sales of 1.71 million games sold. The PlayStation 3 is up 99,000 (7%) to 1.44 million games sold. The DS increases 120,000 (9%) to 1.42 million. The PSP has the biggest increase of all the platforms as it increases 276,000 (53%) to 794,000 games sold. The 3DS is the only platform to drop in sales. It decreases 49,000 (-16%) to 267,000 games sold. Total combined software is up week on week to 7.40 million games sold an increase of 750,000 (11%).

Year on year software total are down for every platform except for the PSP. The PSP is up 295,000 (59%). The Xbox 360 is down 99,000, the PlayStation 3 is down 449,000 (-24%), the Wii is down 619,000 (-26%), and the DS is down 331,000 (-19%). Total combined software is down 936,000 (-11%) games sold year on year.

Software Home Consoles

After much bigger drops for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 last week than the Wii, the Xbox 360 has the biggest increase this week to be right behind the Wii. However the PlayStation 3 lags slightly behind the other two.

Software Handhelds

3DS software continues to drop since its release in America; however by a much smaller amount this week than the week before. The DS remains well ahead of the PSP, outselling it by a 2 to 1 margin.

@Killiana1a - 360 and Wii are significantly more popular then PS3 in the Americas region, and Americans buy more software per console then the rest of the world. Also PS3 has the smallest userbase.

@Killiana1a You must have missed the trend chart that shows the PS3 is only dead last in 3 of the 10 previous weeks and was actually the highest software seller for one week(3/12) and tied for first in 2 others (2/26, 3/26). But in general the PS3 should have the lowest software sales per week, even if it's selling the most consoles per week, because it has the smallest overall userbase. But it's still sold more software than the 360 for 5 of the 10 weeks, where as the 360 has only sold more software for 3 of the 10 weeks(two weeks are pretty much ties). So yeah, pretty much everyone buys the PS3 for the Blu Ray gimmick.

Can someone explain why week-after-week the PS3 tops the hardware sales, yet it is dead last in software? Is it just the Blu-ray gimmick that is causing PS3s to sell, while it's games sit on the shelves?
