The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.
This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5.
The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in June 2025 and the PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

July 2026 is the 14th month that the Nintendo Switch 2 has been available for. During the latest month, the PlayStation 5 has outsold the Switch 2 by 1.26 million units when you align the launches.
In the last 12 months, the Switch 2 has outsold the PS5 by 2.84 million units. The Switch 2 is ahead of the PS5 by 5.46 million units.
The 14th month for the Switch 2 is July 2026, while for the PS5 it is December 2021. The Switch 2 has sold 22.55 million units, while the PS5 sold 17.09 million units during the same timeframe.
The PlayStation 5 has sold 94.09 million units to date. The Switch 2 is currently 71.54 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS5.

And Switch 2s been hit with price increases in recent months. But has yet to release its full suite of heavy hitters like Smash Bros, 3d Mario and its own Zelda.
We're comparing December to July. The Switch 2 was never going to sell more in this month.
It's tough to predict when will Switch 2 flipped by PS5 based on current sales data, but for now likely Switch 2 will get outsold by PS5 sometime in month 33-37
We don't know what Nintendo has in store for then, as that's still over a year off. By then many things can change.
Highly likely Switch 2 won't sold as much as PS5 because Switch 2 will be very expensive in the coming years until 2030, likely $599.99 in 2027 and $699.99 by 2030
I highly doubt that.
For this to happen, component prices would need to explode on top of the explosion it's already doing. As in, memory prices would need to more than double the extremely high prices that they already have, and by then even AI companies wouldn't buy it anymore.
Also, Nintendo is very reluctant to raise the price, they already delayed the increase by half a year in the west, and that increase was very moderate. I really don't see them going past $599 at all.
Finally, if the Switch 2 would be getting so expensive, then the PS6 would have a starting price of $999 minimum due to the things that the Switch has that make it more expensive, the PS6 will have much more of those. And by that point, the Switch 2 would pretty much be the only gaming option that's halfway affordable...
Not really. Xbox Series S is at the same price as Switch 2.

That's not the question. You seem under the illusion that this would only affect the Switch 2, but like I said, in that case the PS6 would be at least $999. At that price, most would rather buy a $599 or even $699 Switch than a console that costs north of $1000. In other words, sales of the Switch 2 would be much less affected than you think. At those prices, PS6 and XBox next will simply not sell, and PC is even more expensive, so the only option in an half-way affordable price range would be the Switch 2, so people will buy it instead.
Also, mentioning the Series S when nobody's buying that one, especially outside of the US, and being on the way out, is a bit hilarious, but technically true.
