Sony Ships 6.3m PS3s, 3.6m PSPs, 2.1m PS2s in Oct-Dec 2010 - News
by VGChartz Staff , posted on 03 February 2011 / 6,968 ViewsSony's data for the quarter ending December 2010 has arrived. During the quarter ending December 2010, Sony generated 2.206t Yen in revenue, or $27.238b at current exchange rates. That figure is down slightly from 2.237t Yen in the December 2009 quarter (nearly $1.0b). Profit for the quarter reached 72.3b Yen, or $893m. Like revenue, that figure is down from the previous December quarter, when profit tallied 79.2b Yen. Sony has also revised its total revenue figures for the year to March 2011 down slightly - to 7.2t Yen from 7.4t Yen ($88.4b instead of $90.8b). Profit for the fiscal year is still forecast to reach 70b Yen ($858.9m).
Sony's Networked Products & Services division, which includes Playstation products and Viao computers among other devices, saw revenues fall to 566.6b Yen ($6.995b) from 605.5b Yen in the previous December quarter. Sony says declining game business revenue led to the decline in revenue for the division, partly on the Yen. However, the operating income of the division increased to 45.7b Yen ($564m) from 26.3b Yen in the previous December quarter due to PS3 hardware cost reductions and stronger PS3 software sales.
When Sony announced its previous projections for the fiscal year, the company expected 15m PS3s, 8m PSPs, and 6m PS2s to ship in the year to March 2011, along with approximately 195m games for those systems. As of the latest update (page 7), which takes into account October to December data, Sony expects to ship the same volumes as it had predicted before.
Sony shipped 6.3m PS3s, 3.6m PSPs, and 2.1m PS2s during the December 2010 quarter. Game shipments reached 57.6m for PS3 in the quarter, 16.5m for PSP, and 5.3m for PS2. For comparison, Microsoft shipped 6.3m X360s, and Nintendo shipped 8.7m Wiis alongside 9.0m DS systems for the quarter.
With Sony's shipment figures in for the December 2010 quarter, lifetime to date shipment figures through December 2010 are now at the following levels for hardware and software.
HW Sept 2010 LTD Oct - Dec 2010 Dec 2010 LTD
PS2 147.60m 2.10m 149.70m
PSP 64.20m 3.60m 67.80m
PS3 41.62m 6.30m 47.92m
During the December 2009 quarter, Sony had shipped 6.5m PS3s, 4.2m PSPs and 2.1m PS2s. PSP dropped on its Western collapse, PS3 dropped on its down sales in Japan and the USA, and PS2 remained flat due to shipments to developing markets. For January to December 2010, Sony shipped 14.4m PS3s (up from 12.4m in Jan-Dec 2009), behind Nintendo's 17.19m Wiis, but ahead of Microsoft's 12.1m X360s. PSP shipments were 7.70m in January to December 2010, down from 10.62m in 2009 (DS shipments were 19.46m in 2010).
SW Sept 2010 LTD Oct - Dec 2010 Dec 2010 LTD
PS2 1521.8m 5.3m 1527.1m
PS3 350.6m 57.6m 408.2m
PSP 271.2m 16.5m 287.7m
During the December 2009 quarter, Sony and third parties had shipped 47.6m PS3 games, 15.0m PSP games, and 11.2m PS2 games. The PS2 figure is down by over half for software, the PS3 figure is up about 20%, and the PSP figure is up 10% - mainly on MHP3 which accounted for 1/4 of PSP software shipped in the quarter (4.1m). Lifetime attach rates are now 8.52 PS3 games shipped per PS3, 4.24 games shipped per PSP, and 10.20 games shipped per PS2.
Looking at the figures, Playstation software shipments are at 168.7m units from April-December 2010 out of the projected ~195m. During 2009, April-December Playstation software shipments were 153.7m. For the March 2011 quarter, PS2 game shipments should be about 2m, PSP game shipments will likely fall to 6m, and PS3 game shipments will likely reach 29m units (flat - as PS3 sw increases year over year have been shrinking since the June quarter). That would put Playstation software shipments at 205.7m - up 5% and 10m units from the previous fiscal year. Sony's forecast thus is about right - as its possible Q1 2011 could be lower for PS3 given titles matching March 2010 are not coming to the West (God of War III, FFXIII).
On the hardware side, the figures make less sense. Sony has shipped 5.2m PS2s in April to December 2010 and the forecast still calls for only 6m PS2s. The figure will probably be 6.5m units or so for the year rather than 6m unless PS2 suddenly drops off by 1/2 in developing markets. For PSP, Sony has shipped 6.3m units in April to December, so the 8m projection might be a touch high, but its more realistic than the PS2 or PS3 projections. Sony has shipped 12.2m PS3s in April to December 2010, up from 10.8m PS3s in April to December 2009. However, the forecast calls for 15m, which means Sony needs to ship 2.8m PS3s in January to March 2011. In January to March 2010 Sony only shipped 2.2m PS3s, and after dropping down a bit from the Dec 2009 to Dec 2010 quarter, PS3 is unlikely to ship 2.8m units in Q1 2011. Sales and shipments for PS3 have dropped since lapping the September 2009 price cut / Slim model. Thus PS3 figures are likely to be right around 2m units again in January to March 2011. Thus Sony will probably come up at about 14.2m PS3s shipped for the fiscal year to March 2011, rather than 15m.
Sony did not provide any new information on its NGP, the PSP successor - but projections should come in late April or May when Sony previews the March 2012 fiscal year. NGP will be at least 4m units behind 3DS when it launches if Nintendo can hit its target for the March 2011 year.
Look for the round up of big three shipment results soon now that data for Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft is in for the December 2010 quarter.

Sony should reach their goal of 15 Million.
When I said sold below I mean SHIPPED to RETAILERS at the end of 2010.
Also Microsoft announced that they sold 50 million XBOX 360s to Retailer, they don't know how many units are on the market. Based on that information it does look that units shipped between Sony and Microsoft at the end of 2010 was
47.92 units sold by SONY
~50 units sold by MS but keep in mind it could have been 50.5 also.
So current gap between PS3 and XBOX 360 stand between 2.08-3.08, so for sake of the argument lets say it is 2.58 million units. Currently VGCHARTZ have 4.7 million as a gap between those two. Well it is obviously incorrect.
Microsoft has been stating that they are experiencing a shortage of units, which is possible but I have not seen XBOX 360 sold out anywhere, so i think my assessment is more on the money.
OK bit of clarification for everyone. Sony reports what they sold to retailers. Once Sony ships an item it is sold to them. They got paid for it retailer has to sell it and Sony does not care how they do it. Keep in mind that retailer will not order more Consoles from Sony if they are still sitting on other stock. There are some promotions going on now Amazon has $50 gift card and so does Best Buy if you buy a PS3. So they are trying to clear inventory. There are a lot of new games releasing this month and March, so march should be very busy. We shall see if PS3 will see any boost from Exclusives.
Price cut is coming probably after the summer maybe sooner depending on how sales hold over next few months.
wow nice sales!
@siphillis
Walmart alone probably has a few hundred K on their shelves alone. Your looking at somewhere around a million to 1.5 m units just sitting ( holidays the stock dwindles but not by much ) for Sony. Sony is in a lot more markets than MS is. So of course they would have more stock in warehouses and on shelves naturally.
@primogen18
the store has to order the consoles so shipment often equals sales. of course there are always a few hundred k on the shelves.
Does sony do anything other then "shipped" numbers? Why not actual sales? I can ship 3 million units of dog crap in plastic bags to a store and it doesn't mean... well, crap.
@TheWon: And do you know that most of gaming market is outside USA? Sure, USA has about 30-35% market share in gaming, which is big considering only about 4% of the world population lives in USA. These figures are about worldwide market, not about US market.
well done for Sony and the other 2 and mainly PS2 for showing staying power. 13-15 yrs on the market for PS2 is seeming more likely now then ever which helps Sony in the long run. consoles sold pritty even in 1/2011 with no reall edge given to either console with PS3 coming in first for 1 wk in the month and third for the rest. i expect something of the same for 2/2011 with PS3 coming in first for 2 wks. this yrs going to be hard to predict for PS3. i expect even sells for the big 3 until the holiday selling season. anything can happen there and it scarzes me not knowing. well done to the big3 2010 was a great yr. Sony should have released MNR and heavy rain in Q 4 2010.
@kivi95 Yes, of course
You guys know what shipped mean right? In the USA alone you know they didn't sell that many PS3 or PSP. Look at NOV, and DEC the go time for the industry.
So most of the shipment for PS3 goes to Europe, and the PSP stays at home in Japan. Since the sell both systems better in those regions. I would like to know why retailers are sitting on that much product. At this point I wouldn't order any thing else until I saw a considerable upswing going on. Last holiday season at least in the US didn't build that confidences.
:::picks nose:::
PSP is doing pretty well for a console that is doomed.
So the ps3 is a ittle undertracked on vgchartz then?
so the shipping gap between ps3 and xbox is smaller than 3 million. could be within one million by the end of the year
VGchartz seems spot on with PS3, DS could outship PS2 by June 2010.
ps2s are still selling well especially being a last gen console
Uuh. Ps2 reaching 150 million now-ish. Awesome.
"Sony shipped 14.4m PS3s (up from 12.4m in Jan-Dec 2009), behind Nintendo's 17.19m Wiis, but ahead of Microsoft's 12.1m X360s"
outsold 360 by 2million this year, thats pretty good
12.2 million PS3s shipped so far and the target is 15m for the fiscal year. 2.8mill for Q4 could see sony face shortages in the end.
Bravo sony.
A solid performance for the PS3 fully on par with expections. But for the current Q1 quarter in 2011 (ending March) I expect the best performance in PS3 history for the period of the year.
@ MonstaMack
Considering Sony was still able to ward off the effects of Kinect, as well as another Christmas of $199 360 SKU, and sell the same amount of PS3's as MS sold 360's, I think 2011 is going to be a good one for Sony. Plus this year, PS3 will drop to ~$250. Yes, I know the Elite will drop in price, too, but it will have a much greater affect on PS3 sales. I can't een imagine what will happen to PS3 sales in 2012/2013 when it will drop to ~$200. I think the gap at the end of the yearr will be ~ 1-2 mil. And it will definitely have passed the 360 by/in 2013.
not bad
Good news for Sony fans all around, but they aren't out shipping MS yet so the gap won't shrink much if at all. I wonder if 2013 will be the year Sony gets within one million units.
Wow. Pretty much spot on with the hardware sales for PS3. Dunno about 2 million PSPs being out in the wild though. Interesting that Sony are basically expecting 3 quarters of net losses and only the Sept-Dec quarter being where they make profits. I guess that's how it is for a lot of companies. Also it means they've profited even during all the R&D costs going in to PSP2 and PSPhone (though I guess some of the R&D will be shared between the 2.
