Monster Hunter Portable 3rd Causes Record PSP Sales in Japan - News

by Gabriel Franco , posted on 07 December 2010 / 9,921 Views

The PSP has recorded its biggest weekly hardware sales in Japan since its 2005 launch, thanks to Monster Hunter Portable 3rd's. In its first five days, covering December 1 through December 5, Monster Hunter Portable 3rd sold 2,146,467 units. The game also gave a huge boost to PSP hardware sales. Over the week, PSP sold 326,639 hardware units, 4.31 times more than previous week. Both the software and hardware figures are new records for the PSP in Japan.

 Sony and Capcom also released a special Monster Hunter PSP system with slight hardware redesigns based of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd play. No data on how many of those were sold on the week.

Good for PSP, especially when its sales dying off in everywhere else in the world. At least this convinced me that PSP2 is going to sell a decent amount in JP. But I think elsewhere is IPOD land now...

It seems that a good amount of people in Japan either sold their PSPs or broke them by accident and bought a new one just for this game. I would xD

Niiiice for PSP. Not possible for a PS3 version to compete with that, but WTF is with releasing a 360 MH game if the reason for not releasing a PS3 game is because it has no chance of selling as well as PSP version. It's not like Capcom don't have the middleware for making PS3 games.

@Kenology

But Pokemon is BLACK and WHITE. They have two versions of the same game, and many people buying 2 copies, its a bit ridiculous to compare to other portable games in my opinion. I know this sounds kinda fanboy-ish in my part as well, but I hate that Red Green Blue made it in the same category and show HUGE sales.

Seems unfair to other games.

The Monster Hunter games were on consoles at first, and the only one that did well was the Wii version of 3. Considering how the console version's opening was a fraction of the portable version's, and the fact that console games are more expensive, I fail to see why Capcom would consider a release on the 4th most popular platform in the franchises home country.

@postofficebuddy: Wasn't Pokemon B&W undershipped as well?

Not to mention Pokemon B&W's first week was only 2 days IIRC and it still sold more, so...

I wonder if that new PSP system will be released in U.S. and UK? When is the game coming overseas?

The JP was a bit off it would seem. Absolutly astonishing numbers for MH :-D

Maybe now they might realized that there needs to be a PS3 version.

Yeah it's good to see the PSP doing well, but it's still got nothing on the DS. I think Sony focuses more on the Japanese market, because neither the PS3 or PSP are doing exceptionally well in the States. Not saying they don't deserve to.

OOh - if that comes to the UK I may have to pick one up...

This is... well... pretty insane. Wonder how close MH3P would have gotten to Pokemon B/W if it had been in full supply.

Patcher should say PSP2 will be the worst system seller of all time until the end of next gen so PSP2 can beat 3DS
