Weekly Analysis, 10 July 2010
by William D'Angelo, posted on 19 July 2010 / 1,453 ViewsOverview - Worldwide hardware sales dropped this week compared to last week for the Xbox 360 while sales stayed steady for the DS, PS3, and PSP. There were slight increases for the Wii and PS2. Crackdown 2 (X360) was the top debut at number 1, followed by Wii Party (Wii), and White Knight Chronicles: Hikari to Yami no Kakusei (PS3).

Hardware - The Xbox 360 had the biggest decrease from last week to this week, though this is due to stock of the old model drying up and with limited supply of the 360S in America. However expect an increase for next weeks figures as 360S was released in Europe during that week. Year over year, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are up 33,000 and 78,000 respectively, and Wii is down 22,000. Handhelds continue to show falling sales when compared to last year. This is to be expected as the next generation of handhelds is right around the corner with the 3DS. The DS the best selling hardware for the week, sold 241,000 less than last year and the PSP took a slide of 66,000.

Software – Crackdown 2 (X360) debuted at number 1 with 300,000 sales worldwide. Other debuts in the top 20 are Wii Party (Wii) at number 2 with sales of 239,000, White Knight Chronicles: Hikari to Yami no Kakusei (PS3) at number 3 with sales of 173,000, and Harvest Moon: Twin Villages (DS) at number 14 with sales of 64,000.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii) in its 7th week on the market is at number 4 with sales of 152,000. Rounding out the top 10 are at 5 - Wii Sports (Wii), 6 - Wii Sports Resort (Wii), 7 - Inazuma Eleven 3: Sekai e no Chousen!! (DS), 8 - LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 (Wii), 9 - Red Dead Redemption (X360), 10 - Pokémon Heart Gold / Soul Silver Version (DS).

Overall, software sales were down this week, with the DS having the biggest drop with -31% but this is due to the release of Inazuma Eleven 3: Sekai e no Chousen!! (DS) last week in Japan on sales of 483,000. The PlayStation 3 and PSP also saw drops of -11% and -12% respectively. The Xbox 360 is down slightly at -1% and the Wii saw a small 2% increase on the release of Wii Party (Wii).
