E3 2009: Hands-on: Golden Sun DS - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 03 July 2009 / 3,470 Views

One of Nintendo's several surprises at this year's E3 Media Briefing was the announcement of Golden Sun DS. There wasn't any real information given during the briefing, but the game was technically "playable" on the show floor. The playable portion only lasted about half a second. You start off in a canyon-like environment, and as soon as you move to the right, the screen starts showing you the E3 trailer.

The art style and graphics looked great, with a black-outlined/cell-shaded look on the characters and environments. The graphics move into a high-quality, traditional full-3D when in battle. The interesting part was that the Nintendo rep wanted me to answer a few questions in a mini-survey style, since I hadn't played the first two games. It seems they're soliciting opinions on the art style for the game, indicating perhaps that they're not too sure of the direction themselves.

There was no narrative information given, and no release date mentioned, though the game didn't look incredibly far along. In the meantime, check out all the screenshots that Nintendo did release, as well as the trailer, and see what information you can glean from that.

I might be the minority, but I like the art style so far, but want to see it in person of course before I say for sure. I love colorful graphics. I think we've gotten too many drab games lately that lack color. Give me a colorful Zack & Wiki anyday :)

I honestly don't care much for the style. It looks like they forced the beautiful 2D sprites from the GBA games into low-res 3D. I'd rather they stuck with the sprites.

Well "descendant" is vague...if we're talkng direct, immediate descendants (the original cast's children) then I can see the game filling in the gap between the first two and this one through the course of the plot. If it's say...100 years later then..not so much.

@Linkasf

That would be a bad idea. The first two are heavily connected to eachother, and I can only assume the same for GS:DS. There will likely be a ton of references you won't understand without having played the first two.

@Auhim/Claude

That. Is total. Balls.

I don't want to learn to care for another set of characters. I don't give a damn if they're "descendants" of the originals, I want the originals! The fact that the characters are merely descendants also means there are going to be large holes between GS:LA and GS:DS... holes that weren't exactly resolved if people recall (avoiding spoilers here).

Sure I guess that can be addressed in the new game, but it already doesn't feel right. It's not their (the descendants) adventure... it's the adventure of the original cast.

Sigh... I'll still buy the game no doubt, but I am severely disappointed in the direction the devs went with this.

Scroll down to the "Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi" section, then read the blurb about Golden Sun DS.
