In only a few days pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch has sold out at Amazon, GameStop, Walmart, and Best Buy.

GameStop revealed it was allocated 500,000 Switch consoles for launch and 250,000 people are now on a waiting list. 1.2 million games have also been pre-ordered at GameStop.

Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime said that two million Switch consoles will be shipped in its first month.

I'm confused. If there are just 2m consoles for March worldwide, like Reggie claims, how did just 1 of the 4 major US retailer get 500k (1/4th) of them. Just think about that, 1 single US retailer has 1/4th of the worldwide shipment. Smells fishy to me. Either Nintendo is lying about only having 2m console in the first month, or Reggie misspoke and meant 2m for the US alone (split 4 ways, 500k per retailer), or Nintendo allowed more preordes than they have console to fill them, or Gamestop is lying about getting 500k.

If he meant 2M in the US it makes sense. 2M worldwide would be way too low if GameStop was given 500K.

Gamestop wouldnt lie about the numbers, so its either the 2 millions are for a single region or that Nintendo said to everyone 2 millions but said to retailers that they were open to ship more if needed. In any case, if this keeps selling out around the world, i think its likely that Nintendo increases the shipment.

I agree that the most likely scenario is that the 2m is US alone, that would mean 500k for each of the 4 main US retailers. But, if that the case, Switch is shaping up to have the biggest console launch of all-time. PS4 was the previous record holder, with 2.1m consoles sold in the first two weeks.

Good find there. Hopefully we get some confirmation.

Keep in mind that Reggie is over Nintendo of America, not Nintendo worldwide, so that may support he's referring to just one region.

Gamestop operators in a lot of countries, so it's not necessarily just US numbers.

Gah, I hate it how you can't edit comments. Obviously I meant 'operates' and not 'operators'.

We told 2 million in March wasn't enough, Nintendo, you need more.

Thank my lucky stars I got my pre-order plus the Special Edition of Breath of the Wild!

The real test is how it will do weekly.

I've a couple games preordered, but wasn't able to get the console; hope they get more ready or I'll have a very sad March 3rd lol... the prospect of finally holding the new Zelda game and being unable to play it gives me violent urges.

FarleyMcFirefly (on 16 January 2017)

You can always get it on Wii U, there will be plenty of those available :P

Find a store that's doing a launch at midnight or when they open... get there really early (maybe even the night before) and you'll get your console.

that happened to me with Wii and Twighlight Princess. Over two months of sitting on a game with no way to play it.

Just go really early and wait in a line people. You'll get one if you want it bad enough.

2 milion ww and 500k for Gamestop makes sense. Isnt Gamestop responsible for like 80% of the US consoles sales? Maybe 700k total for the US, 500k for Europe and the remaining for Japan + RotW? It would make sense.

Ljink96 (on 16 January 2017)

It's to be expected really.

Switch is going to destroy the 1mill sales of the ps4 and make it look kinda lame
