Welcome to the VGChartz Gap charts. The charts will be updated monthly and each article will focus on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation, as well as comparing the 8th generation consoles.

Wii U vs Wii – VGChartz Gap Charts – August 2013 Update

Wii U Vs. Wii Global:

Gap change in latest month: 2,127,336 - Wii

Gap change over last 12 months: n/a - Wii

Total Lead: 8,964732 – Wii

Wii U Total Sales: 3,461,900

Wii Total Sales: 12,426,632

The Wii U has been on the market for 10 months, but has never sold more than the Wii and has dropped further behind every month. However, first month sales were pretty similar with the Wii U only selling 57,559 units less than the Wii.

In the latest month the Wii U fell a further 2.13 million units behind the Wii, bringing the total gap to 8.96 million units. Both consoles launched in November, the Wii in November 2006 and the Wii U in November 2012.

That makes it look really sad, but the Wii was a runaway hit. Could we get moar charts the X360 and PS3 in there too?

That's nice and seems to look bad for WiiU, but it means nothing. Comparing anything to the Wii would give a picture like this; Wii always wins easily. It was an absolute monster that didn't have a precedent and is not going to be repeated.

Compare U with anything, it will still look pretty bad. in first FULL year 360 did 6.8 mln, PS3 - 7.9 mln, as for wii u, even 3 mln would be "not that bad".
And actually, ps4 have a huge chance not just repeat wii, but overcome it and come close to ps2, because U is not going up(30-40 mln lifetime is top), and X1 is likely to take that road too.

Even then, the PS2 sold more over time than the Wii, but I'm pretty sure it didn't sell as quickly as the Wii did in those first few years. So the PS2 would probably also look low compared to the Wii until the comparison reached 4 or 5 years after launch.
