All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10.

This week we will be looking at the top 10 selling Tomb Raider games. Last week we looked at the top 10 selling Final Fantasy games and the week before that the top 10 selling The Metroid games.

Top 10 Selling Tomb Raider Games

Looking at the top 10 bestselling Final Fantasy games, four were released in the 1990’s, four were released in the 2000’s, and two were released in the 2010’s.

The four titles released in the 1990’s were also the top four bestselling games in the franchise. They were released for the PlayStation One as a console exclusive, as well as the PC. This was by far the franchises peak. The four titles sold a combined 20.86 million units or 65.4 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

The four titles released in the 2000’s were released on many different platforms. Tomb Raider: Underworld was released for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 2, DS, and PC. Tomb Raider: Anniversary was released for the Wii, PSP, PlayStation 2, Xbox 360 and PC. Tomb Raider: Legend was released for the PlayStation 2, PSP, Xbox 360, Xbox, GameCube, DS, and PC. Only Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness was released on just one platform. The four titles sold a combined 8.29 million units or 25.9 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

The two titles released in the 2010’s include The Tomb Raider Trilogy (PS3) and the most recently released Tomb Raider (2013) for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.  The two titles sold a combined 2.74 million units or 8.6 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

The top 10 bestselling Tomb Raider games sold a combined 31.89 million units. The top two titles sold more than five million units, while the top five sold more than three million units. The top seven sold more than two million units and the top nine sold more than one million units. The game in the top 10, The Tomb Raider Trilogy (PS3), sold 0.62 million units.

Eight of the top 10 games were published by Eidos Interactive. The other two titles were published by Square Enix, since they bought out Eidos on April 22, 2009.

Top 10 Selling Tomb Raider Games

The top 10 bestselling Tomb Raider games as a graph shows how the franchise hit its peak in just the second release and sales have slid down since then. However Tomb Raider (2013) has changed the trend and has sold 2.12 million units since it released on March 5, 2013.

14.90 million of the games sold in the top 10 were in North America or 46.7 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. 13.75 million of the games sold were in Europe or 43.1 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. 0.58 million of the games sold were in Japan or 1.8 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

Here are sales figures outside the top 10: The entire Tomb Raider franchise sold more than 32 million units worldwide. More than 15 million units sold were in North America, more than 14 million were in Europe and just 0.68 million units were sold in Japan.

When you separate the titles by platform the top five titles sold more than two million and the top 11 titles sold more than one million units. The top 19 titles sold more than 500,000 units and the top 24 titles sold more than 200,000 units.

Legend reversed the trend as it sold more than Angel of Darkness, and Anniversary and Underworld both saw increased sales over Legend. So far Tomb Raider (2013) has not even achieved Underworld's sales. Until it does it's actually the first title since Angel of Darkness to have not achieved better sales than the preceding title.

"They were released for the PlayStation One as a console exclusive, as well as the PC." WRONG! The first Tomb Raider was also released for the Sega Saturn.
