3DS Total Sales have Passed the PlayStation 3 in Japan - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 13 December 2012 / 12,163 Views

While the PlayStation 3 may have just passed 70 million in sales worldwide, it was also passed by the 3DS in Japan. The 3DS has now sold 8.80 million units in Japan, while the PlayStation 3 has sold 8.75 million units, according to VGChartz latest figures.

The 3DS sold 213,000 units for the week ending December 9, while the PlayStation 3 sold 37,269 units. However software sales for the two platforms are nearly identical for the week. 553,615 games were sold for the PlayStation 3, while 521,068 games were sold for the 3DS.

This comes as no surprised because handhelds for the last couple of generations has been more popular than home consoles. The Wii, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have sold a combined 23.02 million units in Japan, while the DS by itself has sold 33.00 million units. Also the PSP has sold 19.35 million units.

The PSP will be at around 80 million when all is said and done! I think the 3DS will do about 55 Million LT and the Vita about 45 Million LT! (I am a bit optimistic with Vita and PSP)

3DS is such a beast in Japan and MH4 is not even released yet...

Animal Crossing is carrying the 3DS nicely in Japan this holiday season. MH4 will only ensure Nintendomination for the hand helds during 2013 in Japan.

3DS doing well in Japan will get Nintendo to pump out more games. 90% of them will make it here to the USA... We all win!

Nintendo should pat themselves on the back for this one. Just shy of two years, for 3DS to have install base in Japan larger than PS3 is an amazing feat. Nintendo seems to be proving the pundits wrong about smartphones destroying handheld sales. 3DS is strong.

That was quick, although expected. PS3 dropped a ton from PS2 sales in Japan. Hopefully 3DS picks up the pace in the US and Europe too.

Hmm... Didn't know Japan was such a small market comparing to US and Europe.

1 more year, and Wii will be topped too. Wonder if PSV will be a success like PSP, or a flop in Japan.

The old PSP is still outselling Vita 2:1 in Japan, even if the Vita is vastly outselling the PSP in the rest of the world. I don't think this will turn around any time soon, unless Sony shells out for some creative people to really impress the world with new dvisual esign on Vita.

Japan couldn't care less about Uncharted , Assassin's Creed, and BLOPS.
