Sony Forms New Studio SuperBot to Develop Smash Bros. Style Game - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 27 April 2012 / 4,915 Views

Sony has announced that they formed a new video game studio back in 2009 called SuperBot Entertainment. The studio is based out of Culber City, California and Sony has revealed that there are nearly 100 industry veterans working their. They are currently working on a Super Smash Bros. inspired game for the PlayStation 3 called PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

The game is a side-scrolling brawler, with multiplayer and characters from popular PlayStation franchises. The characters include Fat Princess, Kratos, Parappa the Rapper and Sly Cooper. There will also be characters from third-party games that have been on a PlayStation platform before.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is a "celebration of a storied history of great characters and rich worlds brought together in one game. And for us, there’s no better way to celebrate than by creating an experience that players can sit around one screen and enjoy together."

I would love to see a good variety in the character selection. No doubt we'll see favourites like Nathan Drake, but the inclusion of more niche characters from the PS1 and 2 days such as Tomba would be amazing.

It is as they say, copying is the highest form of flattery. This is a good thing, as it pressures Sora to make the next Smash installment, GOOD!

I wish they based this off power stone instead of SSB. If you think about it Nintendo's legacy is in its 2d games from the nes and snes days so it made sense to have a 2d brawler. Playstation has always been about 3d games so a power stone type game would fit better. Who am I kidding I just want Power Stone 3

Sit around one screen and enjoy together must bean local multiplayer. How many PS3 owners have more than 2 controllers?

There are not so many iconic characters, some they could use they become multiplatform series, but fat princess and parappa are good entries that i didn't expect.
Maybe the mute guy from Drakengard it's the click for me. But most characters i love from Sony are from the PS1 era so i don't really know if i'm willing to play this, i have to see the full roster.

I actually think they are independent, their website lists them as such. However, they were actually based in Sony Santa Monica for at least a year, taken under the wing by the accomplished studio and probably taught how to use the tech. With the massive resources SSM have at their disposal and the working relationships they have with so many other studios, it makes sense that Superbot Entertainment found their feet there, especially given the nature of the title they are creating.

It's working 'there' not 'their'. Essential that articles like this get the basic grammar correct. Aside from that Sony having another big studio is a plus, actually really looking forward to this game.

Can't wait to see which characters they put it in there!

I want a Valkyria Chronicles character! Snake and Cloud/Sephiroth are obvious.

So they are not independent?

And it also says they are exclusive to Sony. They contradict themselves lol, so I prefer to believe in the interview in which they say that they were handpicked by Sony from Sony Santa Monica crew in order to make the New Studio.

I don't mind Sony copying Nintendo again, after all they have a lot of IP's and Dmash Bros is awesome, but they gotta think of a more imaginative name then that.
