Monster Hunter Tri Statistics Show Growing Userbase - News

by Nicholas Taylor , posted on 29 April 2011 / 4,676 Views

According to website Coffee With Games, the player statistics outside of Japan of Capcom's 2010 title Monster Hunter Tri have actually increased with time instead of decreasing, as games usually tend to do.

They report that since the game's release 371 days ago, 69,839 players have racked up an average of 90 hours and 25 minutes each, totaling 6,313,210 hours of Monster Hunter Tri played. What may be the most interesting part is that compared to the last time they checked the numbers, which was back in November 2010, both the number of players and average total play time per player have actually increased, whichpoints to the fanbase getting more interested in it.

It was also reported that an average play session lasts 3 hours and 26 minutes. However, these figures only include players who use the Nintendo Channel's reporting function, which means that the real numbers might be even higher.

Monster Hunter Tri released outside of Japan in April 2010, exclusively for the Nintendo Wii. In Japan, the game was released in August 2009. Monster Hunter is one of Capcom's biggest franchises in Japan, most notably on the Sony PSP, and has now started finding its ground internationally as well.

Is a good sign that interest in the game will keep ... It is truly one of the best games made for Wii ... According my Nintendo Channel I've played over 446 hours to that game ... Still, I'm missing a lot of accessories and weapons to get ... XD...PLEASE PLAY MH3... It's excellent game...

I hope Capcom continue the series on Nintendo platforms, I really do not care if it comes in other consoles...

@ryuzaki yes I had seen that other one as well, but there isn't really anything useful from it regarding playing time.

I didn't doubt that Black Ops would have more time spent on it by the users, I just think you were overstating it by saying "really weak" in comparison.

And as I said, we can only guess what the details of those CoD figures are... reading my source of it again the 600k hours could be referring to all games time, not just online. (obviously the stats would only be taken from those players with access to online, but we don't even know if Activision extrapolated them to make an estimate for all users)

But also yes, the Nintendo Channel stats is likely to be the more active users... this is also true of the CoD stats as anyone who bought BO without online access will hardly play it at all in comparison, but I think it will be a larger bias for MH3. Again though I tell you it will only go up to 6h time in a single day, which for many of the more avid players is severely limiting... as shown with my Zelda time. Iv'e played 220 hours of Zelda in total, and just over 20 hours is not counted for the NC stats.... similarly for Mario Kart I have 375 hours, with another 20 not counted. I don't have MH3 myself but given it has the highest session time in the PAL nintendo channel data (on average people spend over 3 hours on it every time they start the game) I would imagine there are quite a lot of 6h+ sessions.

Here you have more stats

http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/83838/black-ops-online-stats-161-world-war-2s-fought-every-day/

I guess you've seen this one already

http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/83240/gamers-have-already-played-68000-years-of-cod-black-ops/

so on december 28th the average online for Black Ops was, as you said, roughly 30 hours. But the stats are based on the entire online userbase, unlike those MH3 stats that come from 69'839 players only. What if those people are actually the most active users? Many Black Ops' heavy players have an added play time that counts in weeks. Of course those numbers are even higher for MW2, but sadly nobody's tracking...

I need to play this online. How do I get Wii online?

TWRoO (on 29 April 2011)

I found some for Black Ops from Christmas.... apparently there were more than 600 million hours played on the game, I think it means all platforms so at that time it was a userbase of about 20 million.... works out to 30 hours each.
It doesn't mention that it is only the online portion of the game (though I assume that's what it means, but then online is the big focus of it, and people without online are probably not playing it as much)
Of course that was 7 weeks after it's release.. I think I remember checking the UK channel a couple of months after MH3 and the average hours per person was about 25.... ofcourse comparing the two is impossible as I have no idea about what the CoD stats are referring to (which players are included [presumably all online ones] whether or not the times refer to the total game time, or just online etc... however if anyone has a better more recent stat, perhaps there is something within the game that keeps track)
src for the Cod figures I found is here btw: http://dpadgeneration.com/?p=108

That's really weak figures if you compare to Call of Duty...

I loved the single player of MH3. I killed all but 3 monsters (which I still plan to do).

Then I got my Wii online and tried multiplayer. I discovered I had to start with the most basic and boring quests again! I couldn't take down big monsters, I had to fetch some herbs!
So I haven't played it since.

@Kwaidd.

" What may be the most interesting part is that >COMPARED< to the last time they checked the numbers, which was back in November 2010, both the >NUMBER OF PLAYERS< and average total play time per player have actually increased "

That has nothing to do with inflated play times.

@ Albion.
Was that meant to be aimed at Kwaidd? as I don't think kwaidd has any problem with the fact that the hours and number of players are increasing.

If it was meant to be aimed at Jumpin, then Jumpin could be correct... the number of players increasing could simply be due to more people connecting to the Nintendo Channel rather than more buying the game... Of course in nearly all cases it is a mix of both... without more data we can't tell how much is just from new Nintendo Channel users or how much can be attributed to healthy sales. (keeping a weekly or monthly track of MH3, the Mii channel, Wii Sports, the Nintendo Channel and something that we know is still selling like MKWii would enable us to make a guess)
As for the hours per person increasing, that to me shows that the game keeps being played by it's users. Yes it could be inflated by people leaving the game on for the odd hour, but I really don't believe it will count for very much, and is likely counteracted by the channel not counting over 6 hours per day per game. (for example when I first got LoZ:TP, My first 3 days of play time were a ridiculous 16, 10 and 8 hours.... that's 16 hours ignored right there, and for me the sum total of me leaving the Wii unattended is probably less than 10 hours across all my games)

The cap is only for the play data for all the Nintendo Channel users... in your own game time section it should just show the sum of the "today's achievements" section.

As for you having games "hundred or more" hours above what the game time is... that sounds like another exaggeration to me, although it may depend on each game... for example the in-game timer for Burnout 2 on the GameCube included time spent in game menus etc (so assuming you only had 1 in-game profile, the difference between the burnout timer and the Wii timer would be however long it takes to get through the games title screens, so maybe 30 seconds per session)
Other games though will count time spent once you enter a game to when you exit, some will go further and discount time spent in pause menus or cutscenes.

For the Nintendo channel it makes sense that most of the other time (spent in pause screens/menus and such) is included because most people will still be looking at the screen and using the software at the time.

What game[s] is it that you have "hundred or more" hours difference? because if that is true, unless it's like a strategy or RPG that has an in-game timer that ignores menu screens it seems like a huge difference, you must be consistantly leaving the console for hours at a time in the middle of a game... perhaps you should consider turning it off a bit more.

As far as someone actually running the system idly for days, it's an over exaggeration, yes. I'm not saying this is what is happening with every user every day. My point is just that using ninty channel to calculate and use as reliable source for data isn't giving an accurate picture. I have several games showing hundred or more hours (in ninty channel) above what the game played time really is. I have not noticed any such cap on hours played/game/day. I will keep an eye out for that, however and see.

TWRoO (on 29 April 2011)

@Kwaidd. I seriously hope there aren't too many people who leave a Wii running "for days" without using it, that's ridiculous. It's really rare I even leave it on over a mealtime when I am coming back to play after eating.

However the Nintendo Channel data also (for some reason) ignores any hours you play above 6 in a day (per game/channel) so for games like Monster Hunter Tri where a good number of people will have played well over 6 hours in a day (especially when it released) a lot of playtime is being ignore right there.

Kwaidd (on 29 April 2011)

actually, the nintendo channel keeps track of how long the game is accessed in the disc channel. it doesn't separate idle time from actual game play. you could sit in lobby and go to work or school for days at a time and those numbers show in Ninty Channel. So actual hours played is inflated through these numbers. The game itself does keep track of the hours much more acurately. i have around 240 hours played iirc. Great Game that so many people are sorely missing out on. Its the gift to wii that just keeps on giving no matter how much time you put in.

That why I dont get mad at CAPCOM when it comes to the Wii. I dont care what they did or will do. Monster Hunter TRI was one of the only Hard Core game I liked and played on Wii.

Thanks CAPCOM.

I'm one of those growing the userbase. 3 of my friends and I ordered the Classic Controller Pro bundle off Amazon.com for like $29 in February because we wanted to try out a Monster Hunter Game. 140 hours later... still boosting the HR and upgrading my epuipment. We now have a weekly ritual to jump on and play on Thursday nights. Great game. I'm glad Capcom finally brought it to the states.

Wow, I am so glad I can get news on here that I simply can't get anywhere else, surely not something I can click on the Nintendo channel to find out.

its because wii is a secondary title to gamers. some people heard about it, are bored of PSN being down and decide to pick it up for like $20 or w/e it is now and try it.

This must be for the USA only, as coincidentally I just last week collected the entire Nintendo Channel data set for PAL regions and these are my figures:
(remember these are only for those who use the Nintendo Channel feature that lets Nintendo track your gameplay... so do not indicate total sales or total hours etc... average hours though will be at least within the ball park, though still don't actually represent the whole)
[regions included are UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Greece, Portugal, Australia and New Zealand]

"Sales": 78,221
total hours: 7,020,266
total sessions: 2,241,032
Average hours per person: 89:44
Average sessions per person: 28.65
Average length of single session: 3:07

I will hopefully be making a thread with the rest of the data in it (the other games with playtime data on the Nintendo Channel)
