9lives.be reports that Monte Cristo, the developer of Cities XL, has issued a statement towards their members, informing them that the Planet Offer will not be continued.
Nevertheless, the singleplayer will continue on and Monte Cristo hopes to be able to expand that in the months to come.
The full statement is below:
"Dear Mayors,
First of all we want to thank you for your support since Cities XL was released in October of last year, and as far back as October 2007 for some of you.
In early 2007 we decided to be those who would make a new offer to City Builder games fans. Right from the start Cities XL has always been an innovative project regarding its online dimension. Of course, trying something new always comes with a risk.
Three months after the launch we have to admit that the subscription rate is lower than what we expected and therefore the Planet Offer is not sustainable. Not enough players decided to subscribe.
Therefore, it is with deep regret that we decided to put an end to the Planet Offer as of March 8th 2010. It will no longer be possible to subscribe to the game starting Monday February 1st 2010.
Nevertheless the Cities XL adventure goes on! Cities XL will evolve into a fully single player game. As soon as march the Bus will be added for free in the solo game. At the same time we also keep on working on new content and new features to keep on improving Cities XL. We do realize that some of you were real fans of the Planet Offer, and loved to be able to visit other player’s cities and trade tokens between players. There are simply not enough of us."

It's not piracy for the most part. It's just that it was a game with potential that was quickly released and you had to pay for half of the things needed to play the game. Who really wants to pay for public transport that should have been free in the first place, and this game isn't meant to be multiplayer.
Must be the pirates..that is why the subscription rate is low. Guys, I know I am being stupid but it is meant to be satirical. Piracy gets blamed for just about everything these days.
Funny that people call Dutch an language of leprechauns while Dutch people are about the tallest people in the world lol.
Considering it's a .be site it's flemish (or belgian dutch), the language of angry leprechauns ;-)
Frankly, and this is purely my opinion, but I think these kinds of games should stay single player anyway. They tried to take Sim City 4 and make it this grand multiplayer experience and ultimately, all it did was lead to problems. And now, Sim City 'societies' is being rejected by fans even more for being an even bigger focus on multiplayer.
Simulation games on the whole are a single player focus. You can try to incorperate some multiplayer events or things on the side, but don't try to make it the whole game.
Yep, It's dutch. As any scholar knows, The language of leprechauns.
Yeah, I too can confirm that the source is certainly not German.
It's in Dutch :p
The source may be Germanic, but certainly not German. ;)
Yeah could see this coming to be fair. Paying a sub for a city building sim? Not enough people into it that much.
that was forseable....
However, I just have a hard time estimating how much servers cost to maintain...
ah, that's why the sales have increased on Steam.
well, no wonder it has failed, next time don't GIMP the singleplayer mode and include vital stuff only in multiplayer.
