CES 2010: Razer Presents Deluxe Xbox 360 Gamepad - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 09 January 2010 / 5,286 Views

Okay, I know this is just a new gamepad, but this one is a ready solution for one of the original gamepads'  greatest faults, the d-pad, plus, it adds a lot more nice features. I just hope that it's released in the same way it was presented at CES.

This gamepad, called 'Onza', is a first effort by high-end PC accessories company Razer to dig into the console market vein. Good thought went into this one - it remedies one of the biggest problems of the original 360 gamepad, the mushy and imprecise d-pad. Gamers who love 2D games, fighters, and SHMUPs, take notice. Sure, you can modify the original d-pad yourself, but most people just wouldn't do it. There's also a "button bonus" - the face buttons are fast, clicky, and require less travel time between each one compared to the original gamepad.

Moving on to the other features - adjustable analog sticks and programmable buttons.

The more important one of these would be adjustable analog sticks. Each stick has a dial intended for adjusting its' tension - so, if you ever felt that your fingers or too heavy or too light on them, then here's your solution.

This other feature... is intended for those who love to cheat at fighting games, I guess. Between the bumper and the trigger buttons, two programmable buttons are set. Just waiting to be set to execute Dragon Punches from here to no end. I just don't see any other use for it beside executing moves at fighting games. But hey... if you're into beating your friends silly while they (initially) don't know what hit them - go right ahead!

Obviously, no article noting 'sleek design' would be complete without a photo of the gamepad...

The true "Elite" gamepad.

Sleek indeed. Lastly, there are two things I have to note - one is that the d-pad's design is not final, and in the end, according to Razer, it'll be similar to the Dualshock's d-pad. Another is the presumed price - $49.99. Which is acceptable considering the features included.

@Kylie- Good point, but you might have put it in your first post, it sounded kinda "Nyah, Nyah!"-like when you didn't put why.

Yea it wired microsoft patent wireless technology for the 360 so no third party can use it in accessory microsoft allows activision and ea for guitar hero/rockband cuz they pay microsoft a bit to incorprate it into their peripherials

Xen,

Yep, that's why Guitar Heroes, Mad Catz SFIV controllers etc are wired on 360. MS are control freaks, wanna charge for everything, it's why over here in th UK we don't have BBC iPlayer on XBL cause it's free (BBC is a public funded multi media outlet- biggest in the UK). Unacceptable to MS. Of course Wii and PS3 owners get it.

as a 360 owner and big fighter fan, this looks amazing to me! sounds pricey though :/ anyone know when it'll be availible?

It's hard to say if that d-pad will be any better..

Xen (on 10 January 2010)

MS Owns such a crucial function?

Wow.

  • 0
Badassbab (on 10 January 2010)

Remember everyone, MS owns the wireless function so this will be wired unless they pay MS a premium (which they won't).

The D-pad tasty, unfortunately, with (2) small children, a cord is a no-go. I would probably pick it up for my gaming PC because it is in the bedroom away from the kids.

As long as the cord is sufficiently long, I'm fine with wired only. Also, the face buttons (xyab) look better than a regular xbox controller because they're perfectly flat.

Amazing this has been built for MLG Gamers !!!

Has a hardcore gamer i will pick one of this , Halo Reach is coming :D

Only wired kinda sucks, but I guess it means I could get it as a PC controller too.

Xen (on 10 January 2010)

Oh, it's only wired? Hell yes.

No batteries and no charging them!

@kylie: So then all those people who bought joysticks (e.g. Madcatz SFIV Fightstick) should also have compatibility patched out?

OP: The controller does look pretty slick. I'm a big Razer fan (been using their PC stuff for years now, currently with a DeathAdder mouse and Lycosa keyboard) and this does look pretty cool.

The controller will be wired though.
The Razer website states: "With a 15 foot super long light weight braided cable and a gold plated USB connector the Razer Onza guarantees tournament grade lag free gameplay and will always have you connected to the game in the most crucial moments."

...is this wired?

  • 0
soulsamurai (on 10 January 2010)

@kylie

That is ridiculously retarded and selfish.
Will they have an advantage online? Yes. Are they playing the game it's suppose to be played? Yes.

People shouldn't have to play with a botched d-pad simply because all the controllers were botched. There is a problem and they have a solution.

razer makes amazing products. My keyboard, mouse, and mouse pad are all made by them. I can attest that this is probably the single best controller that will be on the market. Logitech, madcatz, and nyko is screwed with razer being in their market now.

thranx (on 09 January 2010)

Same as above. I would definitely buy, if it is wireless, and works on computers also like the 360 game pads

  • 0
Jexy (on 09 January 2010)

i may get it.... if it's wireless unlike the picture

Did MS ever improve the D Pad for the 360? I have an newish Elite and the dpad still sucks. Can't believe they never rectified the issue.

  • 0
ameratsu (on 09 January 2010)

I really like it. I don't own any razer products but depending on pricing, I'd be interested in picking this up to use with both pc and x360.

Xen (on 09 January 2010)

"Even" a DS pad?

It's pretty good, dood. Don't disrespect. Myself, I'm still getting used to the Saturn d-pad... I'm still unused to going any direction beside the standard 4.

  • 0
disolitude (on 09 January 2010)

@pbroy

I spent 200 bucks to have a saturn pad working on the 360.

However even dualshock dpad is a huge improvement over the 360 Dpad.

pbroy (on 09 January 2010)

Not too fond of the Dualshock d-pad. Give me a Saturn d-pad, then I'll care. ¬_¬
