The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

When it comes to this, I always take into consideration the chip shortages that hindered PS5 production, as well as the launch during a worldwide pandemic. To gave those hurdles, and still be in a position to beat PS4 is a feat in itself.

The PS4 is one of the best selling consoles of all time, even if the PS5 doesn't sell as much it doesn't mean by any means it did bad.

We need to consider:

  • PS5 price increases where the PS4 had decreases (deals are not the same as permanent price drop)
  • Longer shortage at the start PS5
  • Less impactful exclusive content for PS5 compared to PS4.
The only upside for PS5 is that it now has less competition than the PS4 did from Xbox. At the start Series sold quite decently.

with millions of people losing interest in the xbox , sony will more than likely extend the lifespan of the ps5 system which would help it easily pass the PS4

It's really hard to know whether or not the ps5 can outsell the ps4. A few months ago it looked doubtful, now it looks possible. Who knows what it'll look like a few months from now. This is probably one of the most interesting comparisons going on right now.

What really fogs projections is the current chip situation— while I do suspect PS5 will comfortably outsell PS4 LTD due to have a lifecycle lasting through at least 2028, price hikes and potential shortages could slow things down a bit.

Should have a clearer idea by Summer 2026. The entire industry is in murky waters ATM.
