The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned Europe sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch 1.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in June 2025 in Europe and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

If we discount the holiday boost for Switch 2, they look to be tracking very similar after the bigger launch for Switch 2.

To an extend yes, although S2 also sold a lot in October (not really a holiday month in Europe), in the US your conclusion is however spot-on. Most of the lead S2 has at this moment is thanks to it's bigger launch and almost unlimited stock. Which is kind of to be expected as it is the successor to one of the best selling systems to date (without screwing it up like the PS3 did). The real matchup between S1 and S2 will start from month 26 till month 71, that's when the S1 really started selling like hotcakes.

You mean month 36 right ? Month 36 is March 2020.

If I look at the quarterly shipments the S1 really started to take off in the second half of Fiscal year 2019, which is month 21. The Switch 1 did not ship a lot in Q1/Q2 of that year. However in Q3 of FY2019 shipments were over 9.4 million. From that point onward the platform saw a lot of growth.

Though after month 30, the system got to it's prime selling time and basically sold a lot every quarter. Although I would say S1 started pushing out impressive numbers after month 21. Even though some quarters after that were lagging a bit. Selling 20 million is still quite the achievement, especially in today's non-covid boosted market.
