4 years in and still in the lead launch alligned. And now, Gen 9 is already in decline. Who would have thought that back in 2020?
The way PS5 was hyped where i worked many costumers believed in this. " Wait till PS5 is availible". Now it is availible. Its outselling the Switch yes, but launch allinged the Switch is still ahead. PS5 could maybe turn it around if the consoles legs will be better than the Switch, but looking at Switch's 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 i have a hard time believing this...
9th gen, was a forced gen. PS4 had at least 2 (or 3) VERY GOOD years in front, by late 2020, But Switch and specially Series (Xbox One was already dying) make Sony go for a launch of the PS5 too soon, just because they had fear of another 360 situation (a domestic nex gen console released one year before their own console, and selling very well. Sony suffered a lot with the PS3 late release and its expensive cost).
The problem with PS5 now is... we already are starting to talk about the next gen, and this is bad news for PS5, which have no real MASSIVE exclusive games until now (basically both FFVII RE as temp exclusives, and both failed to be an explosive console sellers). PS5 just got many remasters of PS4 games, cause they were easy and fast to make, but gamers are fed up of them.
Now, it all depends on 2 things, this year: 1 what will happen with the GTAVI. 2 If MS announces or not a new generation console soon. If they announce a new console for 2026, PS5 will need a huge cut in price... or is dead by 2026: People demanding the "best console" will not burn money for a PS5 Pro, but for a REAL new brand generation, with games made for that console in mind... (and with backward compatibility to play, among others, the GTAVI from Series).
If MS does not announce the new Xbox for 2026... then we'll see which Switch 2 games are announced for this and the next year. I have big expectations about the third party games for Switch 2: Many developers will be very happy to get a brand new competent machine with smaller development costs in the market...
... but at the same time, having great nice tech specs to do great games on it, and with not many graphic constraints as Switch in fact had. Basically the TOTAL reverse situation WiiU got: a very old hardware, not really portable, not enough competent to show anything impressive on it, and with the problem of how to use 2 gimmicks as official controllers (wiiU Gamepad and the old wiimotes): When the WiiU sells failed after the first Xmas, most developers just run away from that console, becoming a Nintendo nerd console. And that was a totally predicted situation since that 2011 E3 presentation, one year and a half BEFORE.
But first, we have to see what games are in development and ready to be launched for Switch 2. And I'm talking especially about third party games. For the first time in a Nintendo console, I do not give a fuck about a new "Smash" or a new Mario or Zelda: Switch ones are fine to me, for now, and they are compatible. What I want to see... is the third party support. THAT is what can really damage PS5.
i disagree that Microsoft announcing their next system would crater PS5 sales, though everything else is spot on. If NSW2 can get FromSoft, Final Fantasy, etc., then suddenly, not only will Nintendo have the economic, portable, AND first-party edge over Sony at the expense of graphical power, but third-party could stop being a major benefit of PS5. The fate of PS5 would fall into the hands of Sony, and whether they can either pump out a strong enough 1st party line up to compete with that of Nintendo, or if they can swindle enough third-party devs to stick with PS5/XBSXS/PC.
