The Super Mario Bros. Movie to Become Highest Grossing Video Game Movie Today

In its opening weekend, The Super Mario Bros. Movie broke many records. This includes the  highest-grossing debut of 2023, beating the previous holder, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which earned $225.3 million worldwide. It also set the record for the biggest five day opening of all time, beating 2009's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which earned $200 million. It should be of note this is a record specifically for five day openings as three Marvel movies earned over $250 million in three days.

Other records set include the biggest Illumination opening of all time, beating the $208 million grossed by Despicable Me 2 in 2013, as well as the biggest video game opening of all time, beating the $210 million earned by Warcraft in 2016.

Offtopic but I wish the Warcraft movie could've been this successful. That movie was great!

it's still number 2 i think although the budge it for that movie was higher the other video games movies, Blizzard should try another movie for a more popular IP like Overwatch.

It failed to make its money back. It needed $500 million to break even and fell short of that. Losses were estimated from $15M to $50M. That it did as well as it did at all was almost entirely down to the Chinese market. It flopped hard in North America.

The Warcraft movie is very underrated. Fans enjoyed it and financially it seems to have done well. Only uninformed critics didn't like it. Still hoping for a sequel one day.

That describes critics in general when it comes to video game movies, even good ones like this movie and Detective Pikachu.

@Trunkswd Box Office Mojo is currently a terrible source for that stuff. That domestic number is from Wednesday and the international number is straight up wrong. They had it at 194mil but suddenly lowered it down despite other sites still having it at that number as of Wednesday and they update the numbers very late. It became the highest grossing video game movie on Wednesday. As of now it's at 509mil.

I didn't realize BoxOfficeMojo didn't have good numbers. Everyone seems to link to them.

I didn't realize Box Office Mojo was that far off. I've added an update to the article to point out those figures.

They take much longer to update the numbers than others. They used to be the best source for box office results but since IMDbPro took over it went to shit. Thank you for updating the article.

I really wish my son was a tad older and have a little more than a 10m attention span with movies to go see this one with him. Congrats to Nintendo, Universal and Illumination Entertainment.

Same! My daughter turns 2 next month, but she can only last at max, 30 minutes watching a movie. If that lol. So we'll hold off on seeing the movie till it comes to Peacock after the 45 day mark.

Gonna easily pass $1 billion which is pretty incredible. Over 670 million now after just two weekends. And apparently the movie cost about $100 million to make. Movies are going to be a MAJOR source of revenue/profits for Nintendo going forward. Wouldn't be surprised if a sequel Mario movie, a DK movie, and a Zelda movie are green lit in the coming months.
