This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 in Japan, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

i think the super high priced PS3 will remain on top of these 3. PS2 will be number 1 PS brand forever

The PS2 offered something for everyone. And by something, I mean a lot of something. Everyone felt at home playing on the system. I know the fact that it was also a reasonably priced DVD player at the time also fueled sales, but there's no denying the variety of fun software available out the gate for Sony's sophomore outing.

A DVD in 2001 was $99 whilst the PS2 was $299.

I’m still shocked to see people still mentioning the DVD part of the PS2 that help a lot to drive it sales.

The PS2 came out in 1999. DVD players at that time were the same price.

You’re right. The 9.9.99 was the Dreamcast. Still, DVD players at the time were selling for the same price as a PS2. I don’t think it made that meany sales, but it was a factor.

The wikipedia article for DVD Players states; "By the end of 2000, players were available for under $100 at discount retailers." "In 2003 players became available for under $50." A CNN article entitled "DVD players no longer go it alone" from March 2nd 2002 states brand new DVD Players were available for as low as $90 from early 2002. Just over a year from the PS2's launch in the USA.

Yes there were DVD Players that cost $299 in 2000, high-end models, but there were other models that were much cheaper. That people purchased PS2 because it was a cheap DVD Player is a common fallacy. Of course being able to play DVD's was a nice bonus but you were only buying one if you or your family were going to play games as well.

The reason was that people got a DVD player AND a game console in one device.

DVD players dropped in price pretty quickly the year or two after the ps2 release. I do remember the first dvd players I saw was around $600. Me personally I used the dvd as an excuse to myself to make my first non Nintendo console purchase. Maybe I was the rare one, but at least I know that is why I bought it.
