The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 in Japan, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

Dang, Sony always playing the long game and even getting a significant rise in sales when a cheaper 'slim' model launches and all the good games are available.

At it's current rate I think the PS5 may be able to catch the PS4 sometime this year. Also, a lot of people seem down on FF16 but I am certain that the June release will propel the PS5 above the PS4 by the end of June at the latest.

Yep. Going by Famitsu numbers after 119 weeks on the market in Japan the totals are as follows. PS3=2.85m, PS4=2.77m, PS5=2.89m. The dates for these numbers would be Feb 15th 2009 for PS3, May 29th 2016 for PS4 and Feb 19th 2023 for PS5.
