The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

The Xbox Series X|S launched in November 2020, while the Xbox 360 launched in November 2005 in North America and December 2005 in Europe and Japan. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

The 360 had a slow start but kept on going pretty long. So this will be an interesting comparison long term.

Much will depend on how long this generation is. Though the PS360 generation's sales were inflated by unusually high failure rates, something that hasn't been true of generations since, so in some ways it's also an unfair comparison. As those early 360s and PS3 failed outside of warranty, replacement units were sleeker and had cool bundles, so I think many people just bought new ones instead of repairing old ones.

By the launch of the Xbox One and PS4, very few 360 or PS3 units sold in their early years were still working. By the release of the Xbox Series and PS5, lots of launch XBO and PS4 units were still in service.

why not make the chart with all three?

They do one with all three for Japan, but not globally. I'd love to see one that included all three. There's probably some reluctance there if it might reduce the number of articles, since this is an ad-supported site. But I wouldn't mind if it was an extra article. So release Xbox Series vs. Xbox One, Xbox Series vs. 360, and then later release a combo article with all of the above. :)

From this graph it looks like the sixth and seventh year for the 360 were the best selling ones which is pretty incredible. I expect the Series to keep pulling away for a few years but then the 360 closing in during the latter part of the gen. Ultimately ending up with the Series 5-10 million ahead. If we can even still talk about normal console generations at that point, that is.

I think this second wind for the 360 must be due to Kinect, but I am not sure. And because of that it will be hard to call that race early. As you say, Series will pull ahead, but 360 will be closing in. I think the Series has a good chance, but we will see.

That second wind was in 2010 and that was also when Kinect released.

Damn... I knew Series was doing better comparatively to the 360 but this is crazy at roughly 5.4m ahead for the same time. Curious what the PS5 is doing comparatively to the PS3 for the same time?
