Final PlayStation Vita Games to Release July 20

Final PlayStation Vita Games to Release July 20 - News

Sony had originally planned to shut down the PlayStation Store on the PlayStation Vita, however, due to fan backlash it will remain open for the foreseeable future.

Sony is sticking to its plan to no longer accept submissions for new games on the PlayStation Store on the PlayStation Vita from July 20.

Tomorrow, July 20 will see the final batch new releases on the PlayStation Vita - Russian Subway Dogs and Ultra Mission. This comes via Push Square who were contacted by a couple of indie developers.

Here is an overview of the two games:

  • Russian Subway Dogs - Inspired by the real-life stray dogs of the Moscow Metro – the name was a giveaway, eh? – this arcade experience from Spooky Squid Games will find you stealing food and juggling vodka (!) across a full-length campaign and a procedurally generated arcade mode.
  • Ultra Mission - A top-down shooter from Gumbo Machine, inspired by the likes of Robotron 2084. With a combo system and an infinite gameplay loop, the developer’s promising an arcade experience that – despite carrying a budget, $2.99 price point – will keep you playing for some time.

I'm honestly amazed the Vita has had such longevity for a platform that fizzled out as quickly as the Wii U did, yet still was able to survive for 10 years. Arguably one of, if not the most, underrated gaming platform of all time!

Wii U had some decent 1st party games, while vita was mostly just indies and 3rd party supported.
It had a pretty decent catalog all things considered.

Bonus there is the vast majority of the Wii U’s 1st party catalogue was ported to the Switch, so people didn’t missed. I was thankful in the case of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.

Vita was more successful overall in terms of units sold. And it outsold the Wii U in every region except North America.
Wii U had a superior and longer supported first-party lineup. The Vita has a superior third-party lineup in quantity and I would say quality. Don't get me wrong, Vita could've used better third-party support. But it's better than the Wii U's.
I own both platforms. I've had a Wii U since 2014, and a Vita since this year. I prefer Vita, despite some quality first-party games on Wii U.
Vita carved a niche that the Wii U didn't. It is known for visual novels, PS2 remakes, RPGS, and various indies. The Wii U got replaced by the Switch, and had most of its first-party games ported to Switch. Vita has no replacement, and likely never will.
However, it's ironic that the Wii U eShop in flagship regions has had no threat of closure yet. It also has no cut-off day yet for digital titles. The Wii U has gotten several eShop releases this year, and might get some in 2022 as well. I think Nintendo's 3DS/Wii U/Switch eShop is far more unified than Sony's PlayStation Store, considering what they did with PS5. I think Nintendo's keeping the Wii U eShop open in most major markets because it makes virtually no sense to close it yet.

I think it's worth noting Nintendo had much more success with 1st party in sales and critical acclaim. While Sony dropped the ball there. Even their PS2 ports underwhelmed, poor optimization.

Numerous Vita 1st party exclusives have not been ported simply because few are notable. While Nintendo was making great stuff for a failed platform.

I would argue the Switch has replaced what made the Vita fairly unique. I mean it's a popular platform for indies and various Japanese games.

Either way, I am a Vita fan and have a good collection of carts and digital content.

I wasn't a massive fan of that Push Square article, because it only covered two games when there were five (that we knew about) releasing. I understand it's because they were only contacted by the devs of the two of the titles, but just a little bit of research would've uncovered that additional games were releasing.

In the end, 6 games came out today for Vita:

  • Brotherhood United
  • Killer Dolls United
  • Mind Maze
  • Russian Subway Dogs
  • Ultra Mission
  • Witchcrafty

Not bad for a platform that was largely ignored by its creator throughout its life!
