Gran Turismo 7 and Next God of War are Cross-Gen on PS5 and PS4

Gran Turismo 7 and Next God of War are Cross-Gen on PS5 and PS4 - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 02 June 2021 / 4,245 Views

The Head of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst in a Q&A with the PlayStation Blog has revealed some details on upcoming first-party PlayStation titles.

It was previously announced Horizon Forbidden West would launch as a cross-generation title on the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. Hulst has now revealed the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7 will also launch on the PS5 and PS4.

"You can’t build a community of over 110 million PS4 owners and then just walk away from it, right? I think that’d be bad news for fans of PS4, and frankly not very good business," said Hulst.

"Where it makes sense to develop a title for both PS4 and PS5 — for Horizon Forbidden West, the next God of War, GT7 — we’ll continue looking at that. And if PS4 owners want to play that game, then they can. If they want to go on and play the PS5 version, that game will be there for them.

"That being said, it’s also very important to have showpieces for PS5, hence the development of Returnal and Ratchet that are exclusive to PS5."

Gran Turismo 7 and Next God of War are Cross-Gen on PS5 and PS4, Thinks Horizon on Track for 2021 Release

As announced by Sony Interactive Entertainment's Santa Monica Studio, Hulst reiterated that the next God of War game has been delayed to a 2022 release window.

"And for God of War, the project started a little later," said Hulst. "So we’ve made the decision to push that game out to next year, to ensure that Santa Monica Studio can deliver the amazing God of War game that we all want to play."

Hulst also discussed PlayStation Studios' games getting released on PC. He said they are still in the early planning stages of PlayStation games coming to PC.

"We’re still early on in our planning for PC," he said. "And Horizon Zero Dawn has been very successful. I think it shows there’s an appetite from gamers outside the PlayStation ecosystem to experience the amazing portfolio of games that PlayStation fans have enjoyed for years.

"But I want to emphasize that PlayStation will remain the best place to play our PlayStation Studios titles at launch. But we do value PC gamers, and we’ll continue to look at the right times to launch each game. Bend Studio just released the PC version of Days Gone on May 18. So that’s about two years after the PS4 release.

"And I hope that a new set of fans can and will enjoy that title. And that’s the goal — we want to reach new gamers who haven’t yet experienced the great stories, characters, and worlds that we’ve built. Releasing games on PC will not come ever at the expense of building an exciting lineup of great console games."

Sony could have avoided this backlash if they just announced these games as cross gen during their initial reveal. It feels like a bait and switch to get people hyped for games by announcing them for PS5 at first to promote the console but later revealing you can play them on PS4.

I really don’t see the problem, especially with consoles still in short supply. People who already have a PS5 aren’t exactly going to be negatively impacted by this, but is a bonus to PS4 owners (such as myself) who have no plans to get the new system.

The problem is just that they, in order to s!?* on XBOX (which of course can be a valid motive in and of itself), were so eager to state how much they believe in generations and that old hardware should not hold back new games, when we now see a clear discrepancy between their saying and their doing. If it now shows that they do the exact same as xbox (which there are, as others have stated here, are good reasons for), they deserve to be called out for the lie they told. Just as xbox deserves to be called out when they say the gamer is at the center of their every consideration and then prove it is untrue by trying to force us out of Gold and into Gamepass Ultimate. Playstation deliberately gave the impression that if you go with Playstation, you get all new true next gen games, if you go with xbox, you get games held back by last gen. That is beyond what is acceptable within your usual marketing spin, it's just a false impression.

But its sony doing it so most here will ignore it and embrace the hypocrisy of the whole thing.

What backlash?

This was a bait and switch. They showed off these games as PS5 only. There are videos and press release photos of these games focusing on the PS5, only to find out several months into the PS5's life that they are also coming to the PS4. I would have waited to get the PS5 had I known that my most excited releases were still coming to my PS4.

It's a slap in the face of the near 9 million early adopters.

Did they ever specifically say they were PS5 only? I thought the trend was visible when they say they would continue to support the PS4 and that their main launch title, Spiderman Miles Morales, was cross-gen. This also has happened with past consoles generation shifts so not sure why you thought this would be any different.
As I’ve said elsewhere, I don’t see what the problem is for you. You still have a PS5 and you’ll still be able to play the games on it. You won’t be missing out. Additionally, the games will perform better on the PS5.
It comes across as a bit of an elitist attitude, in that it bothers you that a wider audience can access the game. If it really bothers you that much, then maybe sell your PS5 to someone you wanted to upgrade but couldn’t get the console and go back to your PS4.

I'm not planning to buy a PS5 for a couple of more years, so this is good news for me. I have a PS4 Pro that will do the job for these games. I just wish I could play Ratchet.

Xbox was criticised from the PS fan base for cross gen. They probably think it is ok for Sony. All we really need to know is that the new gen is pointless.

Was hoping Ragnarok would be cross-gen! As long as it runs smoothly on the base PS4 I'll get it around launch now.

As a diehard Sony fanboy, this is horrendous news

  • +2
mjk45 Iveyboi (on 02 June 2021)

Why ? they know that the PS5 will continue to sell out so it won't harm it's sales and looking at how good Horizon looks cross gen wont hurt the PS5 version ,and in fact since the big hits subsidise other games the extra sales mean more of a chance of new IP being made and also increased funding for the next Horizon / God of War.

I mean fair enough, after Horizon's reveal I'm not so worried about PS4 holding these games back technically back but for weeks on end Spiderman has been selling 80-90% of its units on PS5 in the UK. I fear the devs are wasting their time working on last gen version of cutting edge 2022 exclusives which the vast majority will skip on PS4.

  • +1
mutantsushi Otter (on 02 June 2021)

Except plenty of comments say they are happy to play on lastgen and put off buying PS5. Projecting one's own priorities onto entire market isn't really route for accurate understanding of situation.

  • -1
Otter mutantsushi (on 03 June 2021)

I'm not projecting my own priorities I'm referencing literal sales data coming out of the UK. If cross-gen exclusives are already selling poorly on PS4 because the vast majority of fans are waiting to get a PS5, by 2022 the PS4 versions of games will really be selling peanuts. That puts into question the efforts the teams might be making to get the games running on old platforms. Efforts that may be partially responsible for some of the delays we're seeing.

  • +2
Tridrakious (on 05 June 2021)

There is literally no point in being an early adopter of the PS5. High priced first party titles and most of it's hyped games are coming to the previous generation at cheaper prices as well.

  • 0
Torpoleon (on 02 June 2021)

Not surprised, given that shortages are likely to continue even into 2022 (and releasing these big games as PS5 exclusives would likely make shortages even worse).

I do think this also opens the door to these games getting sequels that are PS5-only closer to the end of the PS5's life and those games could really show what the PS5 is capable of.

  • 0
Tridrakious Torpoleon (on 05 June 2021)

That's not it. The PS5 is outselling the PS4 at the same point in it's lifecycle. This is just a deception.

  • 0
Torpoleon Tridrakious (on 05 June 2021)

You're right, but there's still shortages happening. If these games were PS5 only at this stage, it would probably make the shortages worse.

  • 0
Tridrakious Torpoleon (on 05 June 2021)

They are still selling 200,000 units a week worldwide. The shortages really are not an issue. Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart should easily sell over 5 million units in it's first couple of months, because the player base of the PS5 are largely diehard PlayStation gamers.

Have we also seen cross-gen titles for PS2 and PS3 one year after the successor's launch?

  • 0
mjk45 siebensus4 (on 03 June 2021)

the technical divide was much greater back then ,also Sony didn't have the !st party strength it now has.

  • 0
TallSilhouette (on 02 June 2021)

Considering it was the first gameplay shown for the PS5, I would have thought GT7 would have been one of its first releases. Guess I should have known better coming from Polyphony.

  • 0
EnricoPallazzo (on 02 June 2021)

100% expected and it makes sense, although I though there was a small chance GT7 would be next gen only.

Everybody: "lulz now i don't need to buy a PS5!"
Also everybody: "Why does this game look and run so poorly on my PS4?"

  • -1
LivncA_Dis3 (on 03 June 2021)

It's really hard to turn ur back on 110 mil ps4 so I can understand with these cross gen titles which are all heavy hitters

Gt7
Hforbiwest
Gow ragna

A lot of people bought in on ps4 so they will do so again and with stocks and parts low to make ps5 this is a good move from Sony,

Yes kinda disappointed that these games might be holding the ps5s potential back a little but at least on the bright side a lot of people gonna experience these games and hopefully not suffer (ps4 ports) from last gen performance

  • -4
Random_Matt LivncA_Dis3 (on 03 June 2021)

So we need to give 10 year life spans or something? Hell, why upgrade at all.

  • +3
LivncA_Dis3 Random_Matt (on 04 June 2021)

Relax ps5 hasn't aged 1 year yet and we talking 10years?
PS2 support has existed til ps4 arrived what makes u think they won't do the same with ps4

  • 0
Tridrakious LivncA_Dis3 (on 05 June 2021)

What first party game did Sony release on the PS2 the year the PS4 came out? The answer is none.

They had a couple releases on the PS2 following the PS3 launch, but unlike the PS5, the PS3 launch was a disaster. Rogue Galaxy was a port for the rest of the world and God of War 2 was in development before the PS3 launched.

  • -1
SecondWar Tridrakious (on 05 June 2021)

Sony did indeed support the PS2 until 2013, the year the PS4 came out - support for a console isn’t just defined as releasing first part games. 2013 was the year it ceased manufacture, and also when the last third party games released (which you need Sony’s input to do).

  • +1
Tridrakious SecondWar (on 05 June 2021)

They were still sending consoles to market, that is not the same thing as supporting the platform with games, they sent the console to new territories.

Sony basically says "yes you can do that", there isn't much "input" after that.

  • 0
SecondWar Tridrakious (on 05 June 2021)

Actually it is far more than that, as you require all the licensing and physical media manufacture etc which the Sony has an input to.

Absolutely. My PS5 purchase just went from 2022 to probably 2023. Hell, at this rate, I might wait for a slimmed version of the system.

Same here still need to beat God of War also, only about 10% done.

I think graphics is the simplest thing to scale back though. It's stuff like Ratchet's insta world-shifting that is impossible on lastgen. Scaling back resolution to <=1080p with lower FX can massively reduce load while basic game plays the same. Although question of performance on base PS4 vs Pro is probably relevant for at least some of these, those not on Pro may have extra reason to upgrade sooner with Pro perhaps often being targetted at 1080p. Still, I appreciate the desire, "we believe in generations" sounded awesome.
