World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is the Fastest-Selling PC Game of All Time, Sold Over 3.7 Million Day 1 - Sales

Blizzard Entertainment announced World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is the fastest-selling PC game of all time, selling over 3.7 million units on day one alone. The previous record was set by Blizzard's Diablo III selling more than 3.5 million units in its first day.

The game leading up to the launch of the expansion had sustained its highest number of players on monthly or longer-term subscriptions when compared to the same period ahead of and following any previous expansion.

"It’s been a huge thrill to enter this whole-new dimension of the Warcraft universe together with millions of players around the world," said the president of Blizzard Entertainment J. Allen Brack.

"It’s been equally rewarding to see players enjoying all of the new features and content in Shadowlands—whether they’re exploring new aspects of their characters with the Covenants or setting foot in WoW for the first time with the new-player experience in Exile’s Reach—and there’s much more to come."

Here is a brief overview of the expansion:

The veil between life and death is no more. Discover what lies beyond the world you know in the next chapter of the World of Warcraft saga--Shadowlands: Coming 2020. In it, you will be able to explore the realm of the dead, pledge yourself to a covenant and shape your destiny, take on the boundless challenge of Torghast, Tower of the Damned, and journey through a new leveling experience.

I am surprised, i didn't think the new expansion would do well let alone fastest selling in 1 day. I thought Diablo 3 held that title, i could be wrong.

To be honest 3.7m sounds pretty low for the highest selling game.

I didn't realise console game sales were THAT far ahead of PC.

They said "fastest" selling for day 1, which in all honesty is pretty good for WoW, considering it's previous expansions for years have had lesser sales.

Also I wouldn't compare one console to an entire platform's sales, that'll never end well.

What console game sold 3.7m copies in 24 hours?

Hard to find first day sales figures. But GTAV did $800m in it's first day.

The PS3 version made up around 56% of sales so at $60 per game that would be around 7.4m copies in 24 hours. The only way it would have sold less than 3.7m is if they were making $122 on average per copy, which surely wasn't the case.

Even the lower selling X360 version would have been 5.8m copies at $60 per game.

So yeah, I can't say for sure given the lack of actual first day figures. But based on the revenue alone it looks like at least 1 console game has sold MUCH more than 3.7m in 24 hours. I fully expect that something like COD or FIFA would have sold over that amount in 24 hours at some point too.

Halo 5 made $400m in its first 24 hours and its total life time sales sit around 5m copies. I don't believe the income represents accuracy on game sales.
