EA: 'We are on a Journey to Regain the Trust of PC Gamers'

EA: 'We are on a Journey to Regain the Trust of PC Gamers' - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 28 January 2016 / 5,734 Views

Electronic Arts has lost some of its reputation among PC gamers with titles like SimCity and Battlefield 4. The Sims 4 in particular had missing features at launch that previous games in the franchise had as standard.

The publisher is looking to turn things around as it introduces its monthly subscription service, Origin Access.

"We are on a journey to regain the trust of the PC gamer,” said Peter O’Reilly, senior marketing director for Origin. "Over the last couple of years we have focused on ensuring a great play experience from launch and bringing players a better experience on Origin with programs like the Great Game Guarantee, On the House, and now Origin Access. We’re excited about the progress we’ve made, but are always pushing ourselves to innovate on behalf of players."

Thanks MCVUK.

Easy, put all your games on steam and remove Origin as a requirement, trust regained

+1 Also if they would kindly fuck off forcing console gamers to create origin accounts just to inflate their numbers to access online play in console games which have absolutely zero real reason to be going through origin on top of XBL or PSN

I actually don't mind Origin but greatly dislike Uplay for acting like double DRM, though I wouldn't mind if EA just slapped their games back onto Steam as well (without pulling a Uplay).

EA has no reason to put their games back onto Steam. They make more money selling them this way. Origin is actually better than Steam in a lot of ways, anyway. EA's main issue is how they've majorly borked a lot of their biggest franchises. Making Origin a more attractive storefront helps, but they're going to have to rethink how they approach game development if they want the PC community's support.

Still leagues ahead of Ubi when it comes to PC, though.

As much as I like Origin it's only due to customer service and their client UI, their store lacks a plethora of games I want while Steam has many, the majority of my library is with Steam and not Origin along with prices being in GBP on Steam and generally being cheaper. I have yet to see EA corner all those points if at all, they seem to be content with having an EA only library which to me is dull.

Stop making your games origin exclusive for a start.
What is says is "If you want to buy my wares, you must do it on MY terms!"
Just put your product on shelves where your customers already like to shop. That's just good bloody business!

They have lost their reputation long, long before Origin, SimCity 2013 and other current games if you asked me. It is impossible for them to ever regain my trust. My boycott will stand for a lifetime, but sure, they can try if they want.

I have a gif of a woman who is uncontrollably laughing. Wish we could post images. However malistix1985's post is the only way they could achieve this. I read their statement as 'we are on a journey to try and make as much money out of PC gamers are humanly possible'

Maybe a gif of a person using a meat grinder with Gamers going in one side, Profits coming out the other side and EA turning the crank would suit best? :D

"and we want you to rent our games monthly rather than own any", is basically what I'm getting from them as they try to bring up EA Access like it's some shiny new objectively amazing thing for everyone, all while they don't bother ti make a new Sim city or C&C. PC gamers I'd imagine would really love a reboot of C&C and Sim CIty, I know I would.

Ganoncrotch: I think they should show the developers going in as well, they seem good at wiping them out. Chazore: I'd love to see a new burnout or road rash as well as those.

Ganoncrotch (on 28 January 2016)

you know you can get to stage 2 of the journey by purchasing a booster pack from origin? It's a 3 hour pack tho so you gotta hope the servers don't come down while it's active tho!

TheGreatGamerGod (on 28 January 2016)

Ganoncrotch: Can I also buy the Season pass for the journey which will have cut content which should have been there at launch? I'm looking forward to the Journey getting some early content in EA access as well.

The word trust can't even be used in the same sentence with EA. They say all this. And for what. Next year with BF 5 or whatever, it will be still a shit port. And Sims 4 expansion packs will next be missing roads. Or some garbage they can milk off.

  • +2
Chazore (on 28 January 2016)

You want to gain my trust by telling me to keep paying you monthly to "rent" your games rather than own them?. No thanks but I would rather you I dunno, bring back C&C, make a new Sim City since it's been nearly 3 years and maybe patch in a server browser with Star Wars Battlefront along with some Steam like sales. That would gain my trust back tenfold.

I think the comment section here is indicative of how much work EA has to do to accomplish their objective. Quite frankly, I don't think EA is wiling to put that much effort into it.

  • +1
Chazore (on 28 January 2016)

I can easily imagine they won't, their recent talk of EA Access is basically them copy+pasting a program that worked with one console system's userbase and they think it will have the same effect with PC folk. They haven't said anything at all towards the userbase in terms of what they are going to specifically do for them. We'll have to wait and see but I'm not expecting any sort of pampering or anything special from them.

  • 0
Zkuq (on 28 January 2016)

Heh. This kind of reminds me of Microsoft's repeated promises about putting more effort into PC gaming. They didn't do absolutely anything for years, and recently they've started doing something: re-releasing old games and some minor titles on PC. Lots of talk but very little to back up that talk.

  • +1
Chazore (on 28 January 2016)

Yeah, there's even a thread on Gaf that's had users compile a documentation of the years MS has made promises to PC gamers and how they messed up all of them over the years. I can't say I'm fond of the promises they've made so far because as far as I can see I have to stick with windows 10 or I'm fucked for PC support from their end, that hardly seems like a promise and more of a demand, especially considering their current position with PC gamers and the console sector, Windows 7-8.1 still have millions upon millions still sporting the OS over Windows 10 and them limiting most of those promised games to the Windows store isn't going to win us all over either. The whole setup screams GFWL 2.0 and I know I;m not alone in seeing a similar pattern.

  • 0
Zkuq (on 29 January 2016)

Yeah, except this time they're actually putting effort into their GfWL replacement, and it's not restricted to games. It's bound to succeed in one way or another. I just hope Steam and the other services are strong enough to withstand the Windows store. I don't foresee them losing any time soon, but MS is trying to push Windows 10 so very hard it's almost scary... And sooner or later people are going to be using Windows 10, and especially gamers will have motivation to switch thanks to new DirectX versions. Support for Windows 7 ends in 2020, I think, after which a lot of Windows 7 users are probably going to upgrade.

  • 0
Chazore (on 29 January 2016)

Oh I wouldn't think Steam and co would lose to a single store with only MS owned titles, the same happened with B.net, Uplay and Origin. Though I can easily see MS sticking it out with their store in the hopes it will pay fof in a slight way like it did for EA and Ubisoft. I think because Windows 10 didn't become an instant hate on like Vista or 8 is giving them the ego push they've wanted for a while now, I mean when you think about it they are getting creamed this gen with consoles, but their latest OS didn't get universally hated and with that small window of opportunity they have gone full on force with "only on windows 10/only on MS store, take it or leave it" mentality.

I'm not really fond of 10 or MS restricting all upcoming XB1 ports (no way are any of them built just for PC which also boggles the mind with such a restriction) to a single OS with them ignoring 7 all the way to 8.1 as if anyone who uses those OS's don't exist and yet they support 360 but won't support their millions upon millions of OS users spanning 2 and a half OS's. That doesn't really win me over though, it just tells me that MS have balls this gen despite losing in another fight but they have the gall to tell me, a market they left for dead to take what they have and play by their rules or leave it. Meanwhile everyone else is releasing their games on GoG, Steam and all the other clients, all of them supporting multiple OS's and there is MS just ignorantly supporting a single OS. It's like the rich kid taking their ball home but then buying all the other balls in the hopes kids will come to his house and play with him.

As for me I won't be upgrading, I don't like 10 much at all and I don't like their aggressive stance. I preferred them when they came groveling to the platform they abandoned and gave lip service. Instead I'll stick with 7 while watching Steam OS improve with time and Linux in general is supported by Steam and other devs and is growing over time as well. That and Vulkan is being supported by devs which also supports multiple OS's while DX 12 only works with 10 and only games that sport 12. Basically MS is betting on all or nothing and it's not going to work like the last 3-4 times.

Also Fuck EA , no company have the right to do a platform like steam !!! NO RIGHT , only valve is allowed cause its better to me and i dont give a fuck about your wishes. I Have all my games on steam.

Help us PC gamers by removing your stupid service. Stop trying to be like Nintendo and Sony and forcing gamers to use only your network. Its not needed on PC, Steam, Win10 Store and GoG is way more then enough.

  • 0
Chazore (on 29 January 2016)

Eh Origin came before an OS exclusive store was created, I'd rather Origin than WIndows 10 store tbh, esp since Origin will support multiple OS's and well MS only has eyes on windows 10, all their upcoming "PC" titles are for windows 10 only while Origin supports 3 OS's.

u guys remember how bad uplay was acting as drm this origin thing is probably like uplay acting like drm

  • 0
Chazore (on 28 January 2016)

Not really as bad though. With origin EA took their ball (games) and went home with them on their own client. Their UI is cleaner than Steam's, though they lack options and mod support but they don't act like Uplay when it comes to selling games. With Uplay Ubi sell you their games on Steam, you download and launch them only to be told you need to install Uplay and once that happens you have to download any updates you already downloaded on Steam once more with Uplay.

Basically Uplay is a form of double layer DRM, all the other clients do not sell to Steam and require you use their client in order to run their games, only Ubisoft do this and frankly it's the worst client out of the lot, even after the UI revamp they threw up not long ago.

Also most EA games still work on my PC's, Ubisoft's are a different story though.

I'm pretty sure origin is the service that refused to allow me server access for my steam purchase of the Spore expansion recently and offers no solutions for registering the mandatory key. Basically, the game is still online but the servers that unlocked the content with your key (spore was super strict about DRM) are down, and all they offer is a shrug. How's about taking that off of steam, then? Safe to say my opinion isn't changing anytime soon.

Why? Everyone doesn't have to get an equal amount of love and hate in the world, that isn't how reality works, some people are jerks and deserve nothing but red thumbs! in all walks of life.
Real Life doesn't mail you out a box of green thumbs when you get home after a day of kicking puppies is all I'm saying.
