The PlayStation 3 has been discontinued in New Zealand. This could potentially signal that Sony is winding down production of the console as it focuses on the PlayStation 4.

"SCENZ will not be shipping anymore PlayStation 3 consoles to its retailers however the platform is still available in retail outlets throughout NZ and being supported with peripherals, great new releases and back catalogue software," Sony Computer Entertainment of New Zealand told ThoseGamers in a statement.

The PlayStation 3 launched in March 2007 in New Zealand - over eight years ago. In comparison the PlayStation 2 remained in production for 13 years and was discontinued in 2013, the same year that the PlayStation 4 launched.

That's weird. They still have new releases coming to the console. Maybe it's not selling at all. But I would expect more 1 year or 2.

New Zealand is a very very small country, I don't think this is cause for concern.

New Zealand 123rd most populated out of 257 territories but not surprising the PS3 probably won't have any new games within a year and there are enough on shelves since it won't get another price cut. (on 03 October 2015)

Yeah but it hardly rank 123rd for video game sales when half the worlds nations are poor.

In all honesty this is because of the high current gen attachment rate here in Nz. Every PS4 new release sells out here in Wellington and there is clearly little hype towards the PS3

I discontinued the ps3 in my house and brought up the original Xbox. I just made better gaming sense as I haven't turned the ps3 on in months. Burnout 3 with my old soundtrack! Woohoo!!!
