Sonic Boom a Failure, Sells Just 490K - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 12 February 2015 / 7,790 Views

Sega has released the sales of several of its games. The one bright spot was Alien: Isolation. The game has sold 1.76 million units, since it was released in October 2014.

The biggest failures are Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal. Both games have failed to sell 500,000 between them. The most recent Football Manager has sold just 640,000 units, which is down from last year's 790,000 units.

Sega has revised the sales for their games for the rest of the fiscal year. Wii U game sales are now expected to be just 300,000 units, down from 600,000 units. 3DS sales were dropped to 1.38 million units, from 2.27 million units. Xbox One sales have been cut to 340,000 units, from 440,000 units. PlayStation 4 sales have been increased to 760,000 units, from 690,000 units.

That seems like more than it should have sold.

These are shipped numbers not sold to end users.

kumagawa, it doesn't matter, because shipped is effectively "sold" for the publishers.

490k for a game that's considered the worst game in the franchise is not bad at all... imagine if the game was HALF PLAYABLE... :-/

It sold very well for the piece of shit that it is.

490k seems like a lot for a sonic game release.

Moneybags theprof00 (on 12 February 2015)

Yes it did very well! Half a million for this disaster. Sega must be pleased after knowing how bad it was going into launch.

Its definitely not "a lot", sonic games tend to sell more then that but its not much worse then lost worlds, I guess kinda impressive considering how badly the game reviewed.

Considering how bad the game is, 490 K seems pretty good. They should be lucky they got that much. Thank you Big Red Button for killing one of my favorite game characters and series. > : (

Naka and a bunch of other Team Sonic people left in 2006, and i think that's what started the downhill spiral. What if every mario game wasn't overseen by miyamoto?

Yet some japanese games make a profit by selling 200k. Western developers! Get your shit together. How does 500k not result in profit? Or how can TombRaider 2013 not make a profit even tho the game sold 3.4 million in its first month?! It needed even more million copies sold and a newgen launch to finally be profitable. Stop wasting millions and millions of money in doubling the polygon count of stupid rocks. or by hiring uncoordiated people that just do stuff you tell them to do without having proper internal studio communication. Monetize properly without having to many people idling at once etc... Focus on important game aspects. Great gameplay without framerate jumping all over the place. Not on nonsense that just burns money

quite often games like tomb raider do make a profit but they make silly financial projects based on silly estimates like selling 6 mill for a game series that historically averages under half that so then you get stories like tomb raider under performed, all because they set a profit target that was out of reach , it's like when a company predicts 16% profit increase forecast and ends up with 14% with people forgetting that that was a record anyway.

I dont count that as a failure, especially how it got very bad reviews.

Why couldn't SEGA just continue the Generations formula?

Aaaaand is anyone surprised by this? There has yet to be a decent 3D Sonic game. Though, I'll admit, I played the hell out of Adventure 2 back in the day. Them damn Chaos sucked me in!

I'm surprised by this. I would have thought that it sold LESS. 490k is actually a lot for what it is.

490k between two separate games? That's pretty bad. It would be ok if it was that for one of them. Besides, the game deserves the label. Sega should count their blessings; they got more sales from this game than they deserved.

I guess they really expected this game to sell.

Dammit Sega just give Sonic a break. The IP is practically dead.

Bad decision to support nintendo plataforms, low sales and profit. Hope They learn not to release on Nintendo Platforms anymore.

Devil_Survivor solidpumar (on 12 February 2015)

How about actually make decent Sonic game for once? Oh you didn't because you were busy letting anti-Nintendo bs spew out right? Get real.

  • +2
Joxsund solidpumar (on 13 February 2015)

maybe nintendo could actually release a decent system and stop being so cocky and then they'll earn some more respect.

It seems that SEGA will not reap good fruit of the partnership with Nintendo ...
It seems that the best bet for SEGA would be something with Sony! Some exclusive, perhaps, or even a small partnership.... Total focus on Ps4, The console is growing very well and some games like Valkyria Chronicles, Shenmue could make good numbers for SEGA.

fluky-nintendy (on 12 February 2015)

Smart they didnt want to have anything to do with Bayonetta 2 or else there was another bomb to add to the list.

Devil_Survivor fluky-nintendy (on 12 February 2015)

How is Bayo 2 a bomb in an way?

  • 0
MatrosRx fluky-nintendy (on 12 February 2015)

So over 600k on one console is bad? Sonic Boom across 2 consoles is 250k average, yeah ok, bomb. Isolation across 5 platforms has a 350k average, which yeah ok, it's kinda bad too. But Bayonetta 2 was pretty successful for the niche title that it is, and could very well inch it's way close to a million units life to date.
