Top 10 in Sales - PSP - News
by William D'Angelo , posted on 13 September 2012 / 17,264 ViewsWelcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise.
This week we will be looking at the top 10 bestselling games on the PSP. Last week we looked at the top 10 bestselling games on the DS and the week before that the top 10 bestselling games on the PlayStation 3. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10.

Looking at the top 10 bestselling PSP games, four of the games are first party, published by Sony, while the other six are third party. Three games were published by Take-Two, two by Capcom, and one by Square Enix. There are also two Grand Theft Auto games and two Monster Hunter games in the top 10. The other six games are all from different franchises.
The top 10 bestselling PSP games sold a combined 42.48 million games. The top 2 games sold five million or more units, while the entire top 10 sold two million or more units.
The four first party titles sold a combined 13.62 million units or 32.1 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. That also means the six third party titles sold a combined 28.86 million units or 67.9 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.
The two Grand Theft Auto games sold a combined 12.19 million units, or 28.7 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Monster Hunter games sold a combined 10.12 million units or 23.8 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

Taking a look at the top 10 bestselling PSP games a graph it really shows how popular two franchises, Grand Theft Auto and Monster Hunter, stand above the rest. The top four games sold a combined 22.27 million units, which is more than the other six games in the top 10 sold combined.
As a quick note the top 17 games sold two million or more units and the top 52 sold one million or more units. 134 games sold 500,000 or more units.
First party games, have sold 52.11 million units at retail for the PSP. The top six games sold two million or more units and the top 12 sold one million or more units. 30 games sold 500,000 or more units.

It's a bloody crime that Ghost of Sparta didn't sell enough to be in this list.
Piracy hit that game HARD. It still sold over 1.2 million (including digital sales) but it should have easily passed Chains of Olympus as it was the better game and released after the massively successful God of War III which has introduced over a million new gamers to the series. Ghost of Sparta should have sold at least 4.25 million, damn pirates.
I don't mean to get on your back about the article errors again, but in the fourth paragraph you say "The top 10 bestselling DS games" when talking about this list of PSP games.
In any case, interesting to read. The PSP really didn't shift a lot of software, and didn't have any huge seller apart from 2x GTA and 2x Monster Hunter. Gran Turismo would probably have done a lot better if it released about 3 years earlier!
It's really nice to see Daxter and Ratchet: Size Matters in there, though. Two of my favourite franchises!
Have you played the psp gran turismo? the only thing it has in common with the playstation home console games is the name really, there is 0 customizing cars in it, if you got a psp your best thing for gran turismo is to pick up the 2nd one from the ps1 and play that on it :D
The PSP had a great potential, and there are a lot of games that deserves pretty much more sales but ... Piracy :(
you know the sad thing about the psp tho, if you play some games like smackdown VS Raw or the burnout games on it if you play those from UMD they take anything up to 5 mins of loading before you get into a game, if you have an ISO on the mem card the loading is less than 30 secs, the console is so much better to use when hacked... which is sad, I've bought a lot of psp games to support ones I've played, but they've gone right on the shelf untouched because the pirated versions are just so much more user friendly, also keep in mind that since there are no moving parts on the mem stick cutting out the loading from the umds almost doubles the things battery life. more so if you get the sony extended play 2200MaH battery pack.
I had no idea Midnight Club 3 was that popular.
I wonder why Sony hasn't secured a sequel of some kind for the PS-Vita from the Monster Hunter or GTA franchises.
$ basically... capcom are very careful especially at the moment to not stick their necks out too much when it comes to making money, I'm sure they're already fearing the worst for the time spent on sfxtekken and will want to see how that does before spending more on a fairly unpopular system atm.Maybe sony could go the nintendo route with bayonetta tho and just straight up offer to pay for a MH game to be made for it, that would be amazing.
I think a list of top selling PSP games post 2009 would be more interesting to see, as the system was considered "dead" by then and it still had great games a lot of people missed out on.
I thought that there would be at least one 10m seller on the PSP.
weeeeell they ported liberty city stories onto the ps2 a year or so later and it went on to sell another 3.5million units, not saying those sales would have appeared on the psp if they hadn't done that but it is a psp game breaking 10m..... kinda
The piracy was rather rampant. Most of my friends that bought a PSP back in 2007 hacked theirs straight away.
I know a few people who bought psp's and never so much as seen a single psp game on it, they are amazing portable emulation machines especially for when it launched, having the entire megadrive/snes/gba/gb/gbc/neogeo/turbografix16/cd/nes/atari library in one system with it's beautiful screen. if they advertised it as doing what you can do with a psp it woulda killed the DS in sales lol.... and been sued to death but still.
I suppose you guys are right. Piracy was more of a problem on the PSP than the DS. The DS had a decent amount of piracy problems but it seems like the PSP had it even worse.
