Gearbox: Borderlands has Sold 6 Million Units - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 08 July 2012 / 6,305 Views

Randy Pitchford, Gearbox CEO, has announced that the original Borderlands has sold six million units across the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. This is in a little over two and a half years since the game first launched in October 2009.

"It’s a miracle we did what we did with Borderlands 1 – it’s a big risk to build a new IP," said Pitchford. "We spent every dollar we had on that game, and while we had a nice budget, it still had us confined to being rational and responsible of what is expected to happen. Fortunately BL1 was a tremendous success, millions and millions of units sold. We’re at 6 million units sold right now, and that is exciting for a new IP -its unprecedented really."

Speaking at a developer's session at Rezzed Pitchford said that the budget for Borderlands 2 is higher than the original. Also the games are first developed for the PC than ported to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

"With both BL1 and BL2, the PC version is the best looking, highest fidelity version of the game, but what we’ve learned, is that the details are important to you on the PC and we made a strong effort to improve those details in the product," said Pitchford.

I imagine a few million of those sales came from PC deals. Every other week it seems like its $5 somewhere.

As far as I know, the new IPs always have the most success with any new console generation. For this one it has been Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, inFamouse, Gears of War, Bioshock, Borderlands, Just Dance, New Super Mario Bros, Wii Sports, LA Noire, list goes on

I wouldn't consider NSMB a new IP.

Borderlands looks great. Pity it's FPS which totally puts me off. I'll play a 7/10 game that's non-FPS but any FP game hads to be 10/10 for me to even consider playing, and even then I'm reluctant. I do have some FPS games on my game list, but those are games by kids play, not me.
