1st October 2009

One game dominated the charts this week; Halo 3: ODST sold an astonishing 2.2 million units in the first week of release – easily the biggest first week of the year and one of the biggest of all time. Xbox360 hardware increased 14% this week to 160,000 – nearly enough to beat Nintendo’s Wii which saw sales slump 16% in anticipation for next week’s price cut.

PS3 sales saw only an 8% drop this week, hardware seems to be stabilising around the 230,000 mark which is over double the weekly rate that PS3 was selling before the price cut and new model introduction.

The other big release of the week is Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box in Europe, where it managed to sell over 170,000 copies in the first week. The original Professor Layton game has now sold nearly four million copies worldwide – the sequel certainly has a good chance of equalling or even beating that figure.

Need for Speed: Shift saw a very strong second week. Normally, a typical Xbox360 / PS3 game will drop around 20-30% in Europe in week 2 and around 50-65% in America (the difference coming from the fact that games normally release on a Tuesday in America and Friday in Europe) - Shift saw sales stay almost flat in Europe and down only 40% in America. This lower than expected drop is typical of a new game in a series getting much better reviews than previous versions – sales start fairly slow but pick up as word gets around that the latest game is a large improvement over the last one. If this trend continues, Shift should pull comfortably ahead of Need for Speed: Undercover in the coming months and should see a resurgence of the brand.

Looking ahead to next week, Sony launches the PSP Go and Gran Turismo PSP and the Wii price drop comes into effect. With all of the recent attention being on PS3 and Xbox360, Wii and PSP should see significant boosts next week and things are really going to start getting interesting as we enter the holiday build-up with a number of key releases coming in October.

@Apollian: The PS3 has MANY great online games and franchises. Personally, better selection in my opinion than the 360; Uncharted 2, SOCOM, Killzone 2, MAG, Resistance 2, etc. All of these still very popular and excellent online games.

Statix (on 20 October 2009)

@Rawnchie14: Japan maybe, but how the hell would Europe be exhibiting "nationalistic love" for a Japanese system? How does that make sense to you? And if there were any validity to your argument, the 360 wouldn't be ahead in others currently. I think the reverse might be true, and you people in the UK might be bigger 360 fanboys than PS3 fanboys, for whatever reason.

Rawnchie14 (on 06 October 2009)

@ huaxiong90 It is in the US, and possibly in the UK. That was Apollian's point. The difference is the other territories other than UK and Japan, which have always been notorious for Sony love, or nationalistic support. And don't argue this point with me, it's true.

Retrasado (on 02 October 2009)

PS3 over 230k very impressive. I was thinking it'd be more like 190k. 360/Wii/PSP expected numbers. but 402k for the DS.... DAMN SON! and wtf PS2 still selling 60k???!! not bad for being almost ten years old...

crumas2 (on 02 October 2009)

@peteypeeps 360 popularity in the US isn't a nationalistic sort of thing... few people in the US actually tend to "buy American" as many unions would like. No, I believe there are three primary reasons why the 360 has sold well in the US: 1. MS gave the Xbox brand FPS network and online gaming out of the gate, and US gamers like competition FPS games quite a bit (we loved Quake, Doom, etc.). 2. MS got the 360 out a year ahead of the PS3, giving it a much needed head start. Had Sony managed to get the PS3 out at the same time, it might have similar numbers in the installed base. 3. MS has been able to consistently beat the PS3's price. "Better value" not withstanding, those who wanted a game console instead of a "media center" box have been drawn in large numbers to the cheaper HD console. The PS3 slim's $299 price demonstrates that having a great price can move large numbers of boxes.

huaxiong90 (on 02 October 2009)

Apollian has to troll the PS3 in every article, doesn't he? He's talking like the PS3 is back in the losing position. It's stabilizing at the 200,000-ish point, and that's higher than the Xbox 360.

Gearbox (on 02 October 2009)

hey HEYYYY didnt the new dragon quest outsell this week one? o well i could be wrong

Apollian (on 02 October 2009)

@gtcarro we have no loyalty to hardware, only to software in England!..if you have great online games, they will sell by the bucket loads. meaning a reflection of hardware sales. what I've seen in Europe is people I speak to when I visit Spain, France etc: is a blind faith following for the Playstation brand. mostly because of football games.....its like how the old PSone use to be when the only console you can play WWF Smackdown and GTA on was a Playstation! those days are gone!....3rd party software is pretty much everyone's to a point, but 1st party makes all the difference. in England, many older playstation gamers have Xbox 360's because they can still play there old Playstation titles like Devil May Cry, Smackdown, GTA, Resident Evil and Final Fantasy on the Xbox, but the benefit to them is they can also play MIcrosoft's 1st party titles which as you know are the best online games around....everywhere you go peopel want to get online to play Gears and Halo!....it doesn't matter who believes in what I say or who doesn't, thats not important, what is important is the trend that UK gamers have for gaming!....outside of the USA, England sells the most consoles!......so it is what it is! personally, I have all 3 consoles, and enjoy them when I can...360 gets most playing time, my kids are on the Wii, and my wife plays Singstar with her friends on the PS3....also I use the pS3 for divx playback on avi!.

gtcarro (on 02 October 2009)

@Apollian xbox360 for 99??? Next step is offer xbox360's (lol) I don't agree with you. Your example is not a good example because you live in England where the people are blind for the 360 (like USA). But in the rest of Europe, Asia, Australia and the rest of the world we have the eyes wide open. "Sony's titles have been meet with lackluster sales when compared to Nintendo and Microsoft's"... because PS3 has a catalog of 231 Exclusives (144 lauched and 87 in development or about to be launched) and not only a few ones like Microsoft, and of course, sales are more divided by all PS3 Exclusives. "Sony's sales are purely on cheaper hardware, meaning it simply cannot sustain itself" ... so, the next step will be launching Bundles at the same 299$, and there are a lot of amazing exclusives to be released in PS3 blundles. For example, the blundle with the GOTY Uncharted 2 will be massive.

Apollian (on 02 October 2009)

@gtcarro, your stating a massive point which many people don't understand. Microsoft move up big by selling software along with the hardware drop. but Sony's sales are purely on cheaper hardware, meaning it simply cannot sustain itself. in fact truth be told, most of Sony's titles have been meet with lackluster sales when compared to Nintendo and Microsoft's 1st party titles.

Apollian (on 02 October 2009)

360's are selling more now because stocks are coming back in, there's still many shops like John Lewis, and gameSTATIONS, THAT DON'T HAVE ANY 360S. AND ALSO my local Sainsburys have totally sold out of Xbox 360s. they were selling the 60GB Pro's for £139, and the Arcade 360s for £99. they also dropped the Wii to £149. I guess a few more weeks and the 360 will be back on top in England and maybe the USA too. Sony has done well but the sales were the normal spikes that you see when any hardware drops...I've always said, its good to own a PS3, Wii and 360, but I play my 360 more out of all 3 consoles. and what lets Sony down is the 1st party software!.

gtcarro (on 02 October 2009)

If xbox360 dont sell more than PS3 in the launch week of a new Halo ( the biggest 360 release in 2009), I predict a very dark future to Microsoft. Resuming the last 26 days: xbox360 Relevant facts: Elite blundles price drop and big exclusive launch (halo3:odst). Sold: 611.285 consoles PS3 Relevant facts: Just with price drop/no blundles(console only) and no big exclusives launch. Sold: 1.344.035 consoles I think this numbers say it all...

Kasersky (on 02 October 2009)

you do have to give ms credit tho, numbers are solid even tho when you consider all things it didnt actually get a real price drop. (more like pro model was increased to 120GB). but compare to the ps3 which had a 50% increase in hdd space, a true $100 price drop, and a redeisgn.

jneul (on 02 October 2009)

Yeh PS3 consisitantly keeps on selling to prove haters wrong, so much for but but but it's only because stocks wre drying up for a month and retarded comments alike lol

snyperdud (on 02 October 2009)

@ Cromeros 1.7% isn't very much lol. If your referring to the 1700% increase on Amazon....well....that's just Amazon.

Makaha (on 02 October 2009)

@atma and FN and everyone else who doubted ioi he predicted that the PS3 would stabilize at around 200k it will probably drop a little bit more actually, next week but 200k was about right, while all the 360 fanboys ridiculously said the PS3 would drop below the 360 worldwide in a few weeks and atma, I told you the market is saturated with 360s the price cut hardly increased the 360 sales, and neither did ODST everyone who wanted a 360 bought one a long time ago for Halo 3, Gears 2, etc. these sales only prove it the PS3 is now at a much more appealing price, hence the sustained sales

cromeros (on 01 October 2009)

Update the NEWS section VGChartz...!!! The Wii sales increased in "1.700%".... Go Nintendo!!1... 500% of PS3Slim ...sucks!!!... Go Nintendo!!!!

CGI-Quality (on 01 October 2009)

@ Lyrik Who said that...?

Lyrikalstylez (on 01 October 2009)

Its great to see the 360 isnt Doomed as some certain fanboys predicted!!

PeteyPeeps (on 01 October 2009)

Hey all, im not having a go at anyone hear really, im just wondering ... is the 360 so popular in America because its an American console? ... is it like a ' save our economy, buy American ' kind of deal? I have all 3 current consoles, just my opinion, the ps3 has better exclusives, better features but selling worse then the 360 ... *mainly in America* Like i said, not having a go at anyone here, it just amazes me ... could be because im not really into FPS's ... but yeah, if someone could just verify if its an American pride thing? or FPS love? or MS style of game-play? Id appreciate it. thanks, peace

Darth Tigris (on 01 October 2009)

@CChaos *clap* *clap* *clap*

CGI-Quality (on 01 October 2009)

@ Adam Had it started off at that price, we wouldn't even be here discussing it right now.

CChaos (on 01 October 2009)

This'll be good news for everyone, no matter how the PS3 and 360 does. The numbers are pretty much meaningless. Think about it. Microsoft has already had their own personal victory this generation. The original XBox only sold 24 million consoles in 5 years. They're already up past 32 million while coming up on that same time milestone. MS isn't going anywhere, that's for certain. As for the PS3, Sony panicked. The Slim is out now to try and bring down the gap between them and the 360. They're trying to get as many games out as possible now to get people buying the console. So far, they finally seem to have their heads on straighter and are managing to do pretty decently. They're not going to pull down PS2 numbers before hell freezes over, but, still, good for them and it's about time, really. The Wii is so far gone past the 360 or PS3 right now that it'd be laughable to think they're going to come close to catching up before they decide to go for another console for the next gen after this one. The only reason this is still considered a competition is because the 360 and PS3 are butting heads. Hate the other, go ahead, but it still comes down to the fact that without the other to motivate them, the PS3 and the 360 wouldn't be nearly trying that hard. They need each other.

Tridrakious (on 01 October 2009)

I can't wait to see how PSP Go does. With the massive Store update today, there is well over 100 games to play. Great for new comers tp see a ton of content for the device they just bought.

WarmachineX (on 01 October 2009)

congratz 360!

adam84 (on 01 October 2009)

So now PS3 is the only home console up YoY Posted on: 10/01/09, 13:34 ye but its had to nearly half the price :-)

CGI-Quality (on 01 October 2009)

@ Slippery: The same could be said of the PS3 in NA, except in that situation the PS3 would FAR ahead if it did better in NA.

Kantor (on 01 October 2009)

Nice ODST boost. More than I was expecting, actually. DS is a beast, PS3 seems to be levelling off- I doubt it will go below 200k for the rest of this year.

darthdevidem01 (on 01 October 2009)

If PS3 beats 360's holiday sales from last year it will zoom past 30 million!

Grey21 (on 01 October 2009)

ODST has nothing to do with the hardware sales, only people who waited with buying a 360 and Halo 3 so they could get all the maps would use ODST as an excuse to buy a system. But if someone wanted to play Halo 3 then they would have gotten it for Halo 3 already so the consoles sold thanks to Halo 3 are already in the basic numbers. The 161K just shows that the 360 or better said the gamers are gearing up for the Holiday period. PS3 goes down but the effect of the Slim is still their and it will show itself again in full force during the Holiday period. hardware sales 65/35 for Sony compaired to Microsoft is still a possiblity.

Loud_Hot_White_Box (on 01 October 2009)

@kitler: yeah, not only did the 360 get its price drop last year around this time, but that was juxtaposed to the still-$400 PS3 fat. 360's low-end price point hasn't changed this year and this is juxtaposed to a $100 price drop and the new slim model for PS3. Very foreseeable that PS3 would be doing significantly better than last year, 360 doing worse. It's about price as a major component of value, and the comparison of value between multiple competing consoles. Now we'll see what the Wii price drop does....

SlipperyMooseCakes (on 01 October 2009)

The 360 v.s. PS3 ration would be much closer if the 360 would just do well in Japan. The 360 is doing ~4.5k in Japan and the PS3 ~40.5k. Still the sales are strong for the PS3 and it looks like the slim is starting to level out and find its place. The 360 will have to make up in America for what it lacks in Japan.

darthdevidem01 (on 01 October 2009)

wow @ PS3DS!

riecsou (on 01 October 2009)

ODST sells 1.6 millions in the US for an increase of 20,000 hardware. It's a big surprise that PS3 got a drop of only 8% because it's not like they have released any "must buy" games. I think we have to wait for the holidays to decide which will be the console for the year 2010. With Uncharted 2, FF XIII, GT5, God of War III its seems like sony's line-up is better than the others. We will have to wait and see.

jankazimierz (on 01 October 2009)

360 up 14% from last month...but down 12% from last year. 360 might be on a downhill slide, time for them to release the 720! ;)

morpheusx (on 01 October 2009)

On the America Chart 360 outsold PS3 by about 7500 consoles.

morpheusx (on 01 October 2009)

ODST did move hardware up 14 % from the previous week

kitler53 (on 01 October 2009)

@ cleric20 - 360 had a price drop last year...the one that put the arcade down to $200 and the core (or whatever it's called) at $300.

Staude (on 01 October 2009)

PS2 PS2 PS2 PS2 !!! :p also ps3 is doing awesomely well.

cleric20 (on 01 October 2009)

Wat did the 360 have last year at this time which meant that the launch of ODST could only boost 360 sales to 20k lower than the same week in '08? I'm waiting to pick up a 250gb PS3 Uncharted bundle... am pretty sure I'm not alone and with the Jap FF XIII edition of the PS3 it could be very sony Christmas this year...

Heavenly_King (on 01 October 2009)

Famitsu said that the PSP sold 20k in Japan. The other consoles have better number that those in Famitsu (with exception of the wii). Wierd, isn“t Famitsu supposed to have numbers closer to reality than this site (at least that is what I thought).

heruamon (on 01 October 2009)

The PS3 is impressing me, as I didn't expect it to hold above 200K this week. It's going to be an interesting holiday season.

Heavenly_King (on 01 October 2009)

Didnt Famitsu said that in Japan the PS3 sold 50k in that week ?? I dont get it

kitler53 (on 01 October 2009)

ps3 settling on the happy side of 200k is just amazing to me. halo ODST not moving much hardware isn't surprising but if the 360 can't outsell the ps3 with the launch of their biggest game of the year it's not likely that it can for the rest of the year...maybe black friday. now about that wii...next week will be interesting. xD

Carl2291 (on 01 October 2009)

DS is astonishing, 400k... Wow. PS3 is amazing, settiling at ~230k is just... Wow. Wii see's an obvious slump before pricecut... But still manages to hold off 360 on a Halo relase. 360 + PSP are pretty Meh, tbh. @ioi, any predictions for PSP Go and GT?

huaxiong90 (on 01 October 2009)

And people thought the PS3 would drop below 190k. I'm amazed...

atma998 (on 01 October 2009)

DS is 4 time bigger than PSP... Nice :)

Cheebee (on 01 October 2009)

What, DS over 400k wow :o

Star Scream (on 01 October 2009)

Brett, any predictions for PSP Go and Gran Turismo?

Cthulhu (on 01 October 2009)

I guess the PS3 wasnt forgotten after all. Its all about the price. There is no stopping now

papflesje (on 01 October 2009)

Are increased Xbox sales because of the cashback initiative or is this an ODST-bump?

ethomaz (on 01 October 2009)

* PS3 stabilises above 200k, this is amazing and should have an increase in October (Uncharted 2 effect). * Halo 3: ODST didn't move hardware, next week Xbox 360 drops below 150k. * Wii price cut next week? Over 200k.

--OkeyDokey-- (on 01 October 2009)

So ODST didn't move much hardware. Wii should be back on top next week. If it's not, then...

tombi123 (on 01 October 2009)

So now PS3 is the only home console up YoY :-D

czecherychestnut (on 01 October 2009)

Flaming hell, PS3 sales are amazing, at this rate I think you're right on Somini with 30 mil sales by the end of the year. DS sales impressive as always, rest of the numbers as expected really.

V-r0cK (on 01 October 2009)

DS is a monster and increased wow. Congrats PS3 for keeping it above the 200k mark. Wii got the biggest drop, but now that its got its cut we'll see for next week. Its safe to say that Halo ODST did shift consoles, good increase. PSP sales went down due to people waiting for PSP Go? PS2 is still king! XD

Somini (on 01 October 2009)

Go going PS3. I seriously can't wait for the holiday numbers. Now i'm sure the PS3 will have sold 30 million as of 01-01-2010
