GTA launches, and Rockstar only *just* manage to beat Ninty for publisher totals. We all know who will be back on top next week.

Wii & DS still dominate the top#20 - particularly Ninty published titles.

WiiFit may hit 4m next week (US launch?).

lets do a little comparison shall we:

Nintendo games in the top 50: 19 (software sold: 4,525,812)

Rockstar games in the top 50: 3 (software sold: 5,951,053)

approximately a 1.4m difference despite nintendo having 16 more games in the top fifty.

and how can wii and DS be dominating the charts when they don't have the 1 or 2 spot?

Rockstar

Seriously though, GTA IV isn't going to drop off all crazy. It'll sell another 2 million across both consoles WW next week, then a mil, then fall into the hundreds of thousands.

And Ninty launched 2 of their biggest games this week, PS360 launched one.

More telling is that glancing over the top 50, the Wii moved about 3.7 million units of software, with about 3.5 million being first party...

Thats pretty misleading, ninty Launched WiiFit in the Others last sales week not this one and still isn't released in the US. Mario Kart launched this week in US, but launched in Others 3 weeks ago.

I can say LTD(Wii Fit + Mario Kart) > LTD(GTA PS360) but that would slightly misleading too due to it's staggered launches.

Overall it's been an exciting week in the gaming sales, now we can all look forward to the US launch of Wii Fit.

@MANUELF: The software totals are not complete. I bet Microsoft still leads software totals, but you'd have to check financial reports (probably of Microsoft and Nintendo) to really know.

@shams: Come on.

@BCNR34: There's no need for damage control, the Wii beat the 360+PS3 combined in hardware, and had a great week in software. Also, Nintendo does 3 million+ week in and week out, Rockstar will probably only manage more than 3 million this week, and then next week will drop below that, and in a few weeks won't even hit a million.

@DMesiterJ: Though there's not really a lot to go by, I don't expect them to sell 2 million combined next week, I'm thinking closer to 1.5 million next week, then less than a million (900k or so), and then after that who knows.

Also, most Wii (and DS) games have (strong) longer legs, and are pushed off the top 50. Also, there are still few 3rd party games that are worth buying, and most of the them are in the top 50 (GH3, PES08), while the others continue to sell decently for their types of games (NMH, Z&W).

ridiculous numbers all around.

yeah i agree with stever89 about gta. i expect about 800 grand for each version of gta next week(1.6 total). and then in the 3rd week to drop below a million for both versions combined. i know its gta, but i really don't see this game having huge legs because of the smaller userbases. i think it'll have good legs, but not great. i'd say at the very least they've knocked out a third of their lifetime sales, which still means like 18million combined total for gta.

and now we get to watch to see the epic battle for top selling game of the gen between gtaIV(360), gtaIV(ps3), wii fit, ssbb, smg, mario kart, halo, and maybe even cod4(360). all the players are out now. although i suppose animal crossing, gt5, and if a full pokemon game comes out they could also compete.

anyway...EXCITING!

huge numbers for almost everything.

PS2 hardware slowing down though now, I am pretty sure it is the Wii's fault, everytime the Wii has a few big weeks the PS2 suffers (in comparison to how it did when Wii was hard to find)
It seems the Wii really has found the PS2 userbase.

PSP software not terrible anymore but neither is it brilliant.
PS2 software doesn't look great, but I suspect a lot of European titles are missing from it so it should be higher.

Interesting to see that the Wii and the other two systems have very little common commonality in demographics. Any other time and there would have been a dip in sales for GTA4 but as we can see there wasn't. This means that the people that buy Wiis are not the people that play GTA4. I have stated this before but my grandparents play the Wii(they own one but don't play it much, only when the young-uns come over) but they would never plau GTA or most of the games on 360/PS3. Nintendo managed to get the those elusive others who once thought games were trash and now are playing where you swing a controller at the screen in order to hit a baseball. Interesting. Nice sales all around but am a little disappointed at the third party sales for Nintendo. Hoped they were changing ways this system. Take out they're bundled software and Microsoft has a commandable lead. Nicely done. I only wish I could play Ninja Gaiden on a Wii controller.

I still can't believe Nintendo has managed to dominate the market respectively despite GTAIV's launch. The 360 and PS3 both shined but the Wii still stole the show.

I think everyone is surprised that the 360 version of GTAIV dominated the PS3 version, though it will be interesting to see which version has the better legs. Also I think given initial reports of sales, alot of us are surprised that both versions of GTAIV didn't sell more. Still there's no arguing its success, though we have to ask if it will be as successful as its predicessors. Even with all the revenue GTA has brought in, how much profit has it brought? Even if both versions combined sell as much as San Andreas its a no brainer that Take-2 won't reap as large a profit.

I just wish the Wii could see this kind of third party support.

'A console with a higher install base, cheaper system and exclusive DLC sells more copies of a game than its competitor' is surprising to you? I pray the 12 in your name refers to your age because that's not surprising at all, that's expected. Now, if the Ps3 version sold more than the 360 version THAT would be surprising.

Sorry, was going to delete the last comment to expand on it.

Yes, I agree with the loyalty issue.

Though I feel if Userbase was a major factor in this, then the PS3 would have sold well over a million units alone due to this game, but no, the game was largely bought by people who already owned the console.

The close ratio of sales between the two consoles shows a similar userbase as it is for these kinds of games already met on each console. I think people are giving the 360's head start a little too much credit.

And while 6 million is impressive, people were leading us on to believe we'd see 10-15 million at least in its first week (at least CNN was), so needless to say this weeks sales were somewhat sobering if only for those who had far too unrealistic of expectations.

True, but the amount of advertisement for the game, also other expenses usually result in total profit.

I know the production cost, but remember Production is just part of a big equation. Also remember Take-Two is a owner of Rockstar....and they have been known to fuck things up financially.

Also @Onimusha12

Given a year ago, when the ps3 launched...yes maybe we would have been surprised, but microsoft really tried hard.

On the other side of argument Remember GTA has always been considered a sony franchise, even if it wasn't exclusive. Royality usually plays big on franchises even with a userbase.
Posted on: 05/09/08, 01:44
MorgZ says:
@Onimusha12 - no-one really thought 10-15 million first week was going to happen. Putting things into perspective this is still the biggest launch in entertainment history. Thats pretty impressive by all accounts! I think we're going to see atleast a few more big weeks for GTA4 so it will pass 10 million across both platforms within 4 weeks, there have been lots of shortages reported and word of mouth is going to be generally really positive about this game.

Nintendo are still dominating generally though but this if anything gives the 360 / PS3 hope. The fact still remains that only nintendo are consistantly selling big numbers on their console and this is primarily due to great marketing of their innovations (Wii Fit) and brand loyalty to their main franchises coupled with them delivering great titles for these franchises (MK / SMG / SSBB).

It cannot be ignored that Wii Sports is and has always been a bundled game for most of the consumers (contrast that the PS3 / 360 bundles which have been specific offers / deals) and Wii Play is being purchased because it is marginally more expensive than a controller on its own (in the UK it was £35 when a controller was £30 at the time I purchased it).

Based on VGChartz - albeit incomplete - numbers:

- If you remove Wii Sports that would drop the Wii SW totals by ~ 15%
- If you removed both Wii Sports / Play the Wii SW totals drop by ~ 25%.

They obviously remain impressive but these are not insignificant percentages.

Impulsivity says:
GTA4 did amazingly well esp on the PS3 with a more or less 1 in 4 attach rate. The PS3 sales were just barely behind the 360 sales even though the 360 has way more installed which leads me to believe that most people who own both did the same thing as I did and got the PS3 version. The big boost to PS3 sales from GTA4 leads me to believe that passing up MS worldwide by the begining of 2009 isn't out of the picture at all especially if FFXIII launches this year (to go along with all the other PS3 heavy hitters). If the 50-100k a week advantage continues a strong holiday season could put Sony over the top. A drop to 299 and the high end console war would probably be over.

As to the low end console contest between the PS2 and the Wii a lot of the software problems for the PS2 come from used games. Almost every good title new PS2 owners would buy is available used at very low prices. With the exception of a handful of new games like Persona 3 FES there just aren't a lot of things to buy that are new for PS2 now. As to the PS2 slowing down, being almost 100 million ahead of all the next gen consoles in sales and STILL selling 400k consoles a month is really impressive. For all the Wii hype on this board I don't think we'll see the day when a non Sony console hits 100 million any time soon (the Wii is already obsolete technology and probably will be replaced in full by the Wii2 rather then persisting on for a few years after the next generation as per the Sony model, their 100 million hopes rest with handhelds pretty much exclusively).

As to the Wii dominating the 360/PS3 comments keep in mind the Wii is not really competing with those high end consoles, its competing more with the PS2 and until the PS2 stops selling hundreds of thousands of consoles per month despite having five times the wiis install base it would be hard to make an argument that the PS2 is losing in any way shape or form (except in software because of the before mentioned used software problem).

What's with the resurgence of "Wii doesn't compete with the PS3/360" lately? I'm going to copy and paste this from another post I did (in the news article on the massive American sales from this week):

"... they are competing, and not just for customers. For games as well. With games like Fatal Frame and Monster Hunter 3 moving over, it's not unlikely that other big name games will make the jump.

The only difference is that the PS3 and 360 (along with the Wii) are fighting over the small hardcore market, while only the Wii caters to the casuals (though the 360 and PS3 are trying to get in on the pie as well), and the Wii also only caters to the non-gaming market (which will eventually become part of the gaming market, they'll just be more casual than casual).

And if we're going to go by [another user's] way of categorizing, then the PS2 was in its own market as well, because it attracted casuals way more than the Xbox and GameCube could. That's why it sold 125 million (and counting), why it's still going strong, and why the GameCube and Xbox basically sputtered out after 5 years (and little more than 21 million each)."

I don't get it.

GTA IV launch > GTA: SA launch.

GTA IV sold more units 1st week than GTA: SA, on a smaller userbase?

What in the hell were people expecting? How is this disappointing? Six million first week sales on a combined userbase of 30 million rather than 4 million first week on a userbase of sixty or seventy million when GTA: SA launched on the PS2.

Again, How is this disappointing?

Ahh... Profit.

Well, I guess when you can't talk about how lifetime, GTA IV will move 15-20 million units, you have to talk about the insane amount of money spent on the game. So Take-Two won't make [as much] profit as they did off of GTA IV: SA. Big deal. They will still make it. They won't sell 15 million units, and not make a dime. They won't sell Episodic content on the 360 and not make a dime. But I digress. Spin is just too hard to combat sometimes.

*sigh*

GTA IV will never win. It did excellent software numbers, hardware rose considerably, the PS3 version sold extremely well for it's userbase but "The Wii Stole the show..." I don't possibly see how that is true.

Nintendo only wants to prove that more people want the Wii more than people who wants GTAIV

Of course, that is not to understate the amazing feat RockStar has achieved.

It just goes to show that Nintendo is holding out on Wii hardware to try and contain GTAIV having release (or will release) SSB, MK & WiiFit... around the same time-frame

It's a win-lose situation: hardware vs software

GTAIV is just as much an unstoppable force (software) as Wii is (hardware)

Now all that remains is to see if GTAIV has the legs to match its predicessors.
