6 Games That Would Be Awesome On Wii U - Article

In celebration of both Nintendo launching its sixth home console in just a few months and the upcoming E3 2012 expo I decided it would be fun to let our imaginations run wild for a bit and dream about all the possibilities that Nintendo’s new system has to offer. For this article I decided to look at six of the main elements of the new console and apply them to established franchises to see how the Wii U’s capabilities can be applied in numerous different ways. Remember, nothing here is confirmed (yet) and this piece is all in good fun, but of course if anyone from Nintendo R&D is reading, my email is on the ‘team’ page (call me).

6 - Metroid: Other M 2
Uses: Two screens in tandem.

Awesome Wii U Games 3

Metroid: Other M featured a rather unique control scheme where you could switch between a third and first person perspective by pointing the Wii Remote at the screen, which, while innovative, received mixed reviews from Samus fans worldwide. The Wii U could eliminate all that needless controller switching by allowing you to see both perspectives… at once! The third person view would be displayed on the TV screen while the first person view would change in real-time on the controller’s screen. No more fumbling around with the Wii Remote when you want to examine something closer, just simply look down. Now, if only we could get Samus to shut her trap for more than a few minutes we’d be all set.

5 - Professor Layton and the Something Something
Uses: Motion controls, A.R. capabilities, and more.

Awesome Wii U Games 4

Let’s give the professor a chance to really test our minds and open the series up to whole new possibilities of puzzles and brain teasers. Imagine using the motion controls to look around a room, tapping on something suspicious with the touch screen and bringing it into the real world via the system’s augmented reality capabilities. Now that would be real investigative work and could turn this series into something truly incredible.

4 - World of Pokémon: Wrath of the Slowking
Uses: Nintendo Network.

Awesome Wii U Games 2

A Pokémon MMORPG? While a truly daunting concept, if there's any system that could pull it off it would definitely be the Wii U. Finally we would be able to fully realise our childhood dreams of going out into a wide open world, catching wild Pokémon and, of course, running into rival trainers (who are actual other users!) in the field, and either trading or battling with them on the spot. Nintendo has been hinting that the new Nintendo Network will offer experiences never seen elsewhere - what better way to realise this than to let all the would-be Pokémon Masters run free and live the dream of catching them all?

3 - Star Tropics 3: HD Edition
Uses: HD graphics.

Awesome Wii U Games 5

Eh, why not?

2 - The Legend Of Zelda: Four Swords (Phantom Edition)
Uses: Wii U Controller in tandem with Wii Remotes.

Awesome Wii U Games 6

At last year’s E3 Nintendo showed off a brief demo of a Mii title where four players use the Wii Remotes to battle against one player who is using the Wii U Controller. The player with the new controller could see the locations of the other players but was limited in his actions. While seeing this demo in action I couldn’t help but be reminded of the multiplayer modes in Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, where one player played as Link and the other as a Phantom; now imagine that on Wii U. The Phantom player would be able to see where the four Links are on the controller’s screen, while the multicoloured Hylians would try to escape using their classic Wii Remotes. Multiplayer Zelda awesomeness!

1 - Battalion Wars III
Uses: Touch screen, voice commands.

Awesome Wii U Games 1

Both games in the Battalion Wars spin-off series were amazingly fun, addictive and, most of all, innovative. A real time strategy game where you can personally control all of the units on the battlefield? Yes please! Well on Wii U we’re going to kick it up a notch by giving you a bird’s eye view of the battlefield on the controller screen. Not enough you say? How about also allowing you to move units en masse Command & Conquer style with the touch screen? Still want more? Well we even put in the ability to call in reinforcements by shouting voice commands. Now that’s a game I want to play right now.

I hope you all enjoyed my Wii U musings, now I want to hear yours. Sound off in the comments below with other ideas you think would be cool to see on the Wii U, and yes, I agree Gyromite 2: Smicks Revenge could be a show stealer.
