John Carmack Leaves id Software - NewsBrent Galietti, posted on 22 November 2013 / 2,073 Views
John Carmack has left id Software, the company he cofounded in 1991 and made famous two years later as the co-creator of classic first-person shooter Doom.
Carmack had previously taken the role of Chief Technology Officer at Oculus VR, the company behind the virtual reality tech Oculus Rift, but remained on staff at id Software until his resignation today.
"John’s work on id Tech 5 and the technology for the current development work at id is complete, and his departure will not affect any current projects," id studio director Tim Willits said in a statement to Gamasutra. "We are fortunate to have a brilliant group of programmers at id who worked with John and will carry on id’s tradition of making great games with cutting-edge technology. As colleagues of John for many years, we wish him well."
Carmack explained his decision to leave id Software in a tweet, saying "I wanted to remain a technical adviser for Id, but it just didn't work out. Probably for the best, as the divided focus was challenging."
