Wii U Tops 7 Million Sold Worldwide - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 30 August 2014 / 20,550 Views

The Wii U, the first eighth generation home console released, has sold more than seven million units worldwide. This figure makes it the second bestselling console, behind the PlayStation 4 and ahead of the Xbox One. It has taken the Wii U 21 months to reach this milestone.

Sales for the Wii U had been poor for most of the year with weekly sales of around 30,000 units for much of the year. However, since the release of Mario Kart 8 in May the console has remained above 50,000 units sold every week and has sold nearly one million units in three months.

There has been seven games that have sold more than one million units for the Wii U and more than 28 million games sold at retail. The bestselling game is New Super Mario Bros. U which has sold 4.18 million units. Nintendo Land has sold 3.10 million units, Mario Kart 8 2.58 million units, Super Mario 3D World 2.23 million units, New Super Luigi U 1.70 million units, Wii Party U 1.34 million units, and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD 1.04 million units.

Finally a shift in a positive direction, but smash will be the game to determine the future success of the wiiU.

Looks like Mario Kart 8 really did shift the baseline. Permanently.

Smash Bros and Amiibo should make the baseline around 90K soon.

Good news.

10 million by the end of the year is a possibility!!!!

Wii U has the potential for some major sales this fall/holiday season. They just need to capitalize by really pushing Bayonetta 2, Hyrule Warriors, Smash, the MK8 DLC, the new bundles in the works, Amiibo, etc. They need to do this, most importantly, by having GOOD ads on TV again, especially during prime time shows, and Monday Night Football, etc.

I can't say anything that others haven't. Just happy that WiiU is outselling XB1 now, and hopefully forever,

Well it seems to me that after Mario Kart 8, Nintendo has been really revving up their advertisement and push for WiiU. I mean after Mario Kart 8 they had an incredibly successful E3, the Fatal Frame reveal, the Hyrule Warriors Direct, the smash announcement, the Mario Kart DLC... (all in no specific order of course) no matter how you slice it, they're really doing much more for WiiU owners. It's great to see the sales picking up and people taking notice of the system.

As long as it beats the Xbox One, I'm happy. Sony and Nintendo should always be at the top.

People don't realized that it wasn't just going to save things in a few days or weeks. Going take time and you can see it happening, things are getting better for the Wii U. Also MK8 had sold over 2.8 million so dno where that number is from lol

  • 0
TechnoHobbit Kallumsmarties (on 30 August 2014)

I think the 2.8 million number was the amount of copies Nintendo shipped to retail, not sold to consumer.

  • -3
TechnoHobbit Kallumsmarties (on 31 August 2014)

I double checked it, and yes that number is shipped. The number was given in their financial report (which you can read here: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2014/140730e.pdf) which only tells sold-in numbers (shipped to retail), not sold-through (sold to consumer).

Take that ignorant person who down-voted my comment!

Check Nintendo's shipment numbers through June with VGC numbers through June and you'll see that it's impossible.

ICStats ICStats (on 31 August 2014)

Check again, VGC has Wii U at 6.60 on June 28 and 6.67 on July 5. That's only 80,000 & 10,000 difference respectively. I don't believe Wii U was on the brink of selling out worldwide.

Also if you look at Global minus Japan you get that VGC has only 20,000 gap between shipped & sold. I definitely don't believe that stock in US & Europe is less than half what Wii U sells in a week.

  • -5
ICStats ICStats (on 31 August 2014)

By comparison, Microsoft announced 5 million XB1 shipped on Apr 17. VGC has XB1 sold 4.1 Million on Apr 19. So VGC assumes 900,000 unsold XB1 and 80,000 unsold Wii U even though Wii U is stocked in more regions. Give me a break.

the thing is though is that retailers dont order a lot of wii us and when mario kart 8 came around demand increased a lot so it is possible it could be overtracked by 200k or less

Now i hope Nintendo realize how important is online gaming + Mario of course...

  • -4
DialgaMarine (on 31 August 2014)

I hope people will realize that this really is NOT a positive thing. 7 million consoles sold in almost 2 years on the market is abysmal, especially when you consider PS4 passed the 10 million mark in less than 9 months. Not trying to start a war, but Wii-U still isn't even doing GC numbers.
