Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10. As a note all sales figures are retail only.

This week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in Japan in 2013. Last week we looked at the top 10 selling games in Europe in 2013, and the week before that the top 10 selling games in the USA in 2013.

Top 10 Selling Games in Japan in 2013

Looking at the top 10 selling games in Japan in 2013, eight games were released in 2013. The two other games were released in 2012. With one game in released in November and one in December. Of the eight games released in 2013 one was released in February, one in March, one in April, one in June, two in October, one in November, and one in December.

In 2013 the top 10 games in Japan sold 15.80 million units. The top two selling games, Pokémon X/Y (3DS) and Monster Hunter 4 (3DS), sold more than three million units. The top seven games sold more than one million units and the entire top 10 sold more than 500,000 units.

When you break it down by publisher there are six first party titles, all published by Nintendo. Of the third party titles there is one Capcom game, one Square Enix game, one GungHo game, and one Take-Two game.

The six Nintendo games sold a combined 9.52 million units or 60.25 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

 Top 10 Selling Games in Japan in 2013

When you break it down by platform there are seven 3DS titles, two Wii U titles and one PlayStation 3 title. The five PlayStation 3 sold a combined 13.91 million units or 88.04 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Wii U titles sold a combined 1.24 million units or 7.85 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The one PlayStation 3 title sold 0.65 million units or 4.11 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

Side note:  The 3DS was the top selling platform in Japan in 2013 with 5.09 million units sold. The PlayStation Vita sold 1.29 million units, the Wii U sold 946,047 million units, the PlayStation 3 sold 877,876 units, the PSP sold 447,166 units, the Wii sold 76,361 units, the Xbox 360 sold 23,291 units, and the DS sold 3,331.

The top 27 titles sold more than 300,000 units and the top 52 titles sold more than 100,000 units. The top 116 titles sold more than 50,000 units.

Nintendo sold the most games with 14.75 million games. Namco Bandai sold 8.36 million games, Capcom sold 5.07 million games, Square Enix sold 3.83 million games, Konami sold 2.49 million games, Level 5 sold 1.58 million games, Tecmo Koei sold 1.54 million games, GungHo sold 1.26 million games, and Sega sold 1.24 million games.

Anyhow, the rift between the Top Two and the Bottom 8 is pretty distant when you look at the graph. And the Third place goes to a 2012 game... interesting.

3DS is still looking good for 2014 as well. 5/10 3DS games, 4 PS3 games and 1 PS4 game. I see Pokemon working its way back into the top 10, Smash Bros and maybe something else to make it 8 again.
