Welcome to the VGChartz Gap charts. The charts will be updated monthly and each article will focus on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation, as well as comparing the 8th generation consoles.

3DS Vs. DS Global:

Gap change in latest month: 974,623 - DS

Gap change over last 12 months: 10,248,944 - DS

Total Lead: 11,257,540 - DS

3DS Total Sales: 34,666,452

DS Total Sales: 45,923,992

In the latest month of sales for the 3DS it has fallen another 974,623 units further behind its predecessor the DS. The DS currently leads by 11,257,540 in the first 32 months. Over the last 12 months the DS has gained 10,248,944 unit lead. The gap is expected to shrink for the next month due to the release of Pokémon X/Y.

An important note is that the two handhelds launched at different times of the year. The DS first launched in November 2004, while the 3DS launched in February 2011.

I thought the 3DS was closer. Hard to match those DS sales.

The 2DS/Pokemon XY/Holiday/Monster Hunter 4/Zelda boost over the next three months should push things in the right direction.

I would like to see another article like this after the holidays. 3DS should start kicking DS's butt with the difference in holiday months.

Rogerioandrade (on 17 October 2013)

Considering that after 32 months the DS had 3 holidays while 3DS had two, its understandable that it is lagging to much behind.

I didn't realise the gap was that big.

Well, I'll be fine if the gap doesn't go over 50Mil lifetime. Would be a step back, but still as many consoles sold as the Wii. DS sales were just like PS2 sales - out of this world and probably pretty much unreachable.

Yep, love the 3DS and think it had a lot better improvements but I don't see it ever reaching the heights that the DS did. Still going to beast for its time due to the fact that it is loaded with software and unless every Japanese company goes mobile it should still control that.

I think the gap will just steadily increase. Hard to touch the DS.

The gap will grow monstrous from now on
