Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10. As a note all sales figures are retail only.
This week we will be looking at the top 10 selling PlayStation Vita games (Updated through the week ending August 10 2013). Last week we looked at the top 10 selling games in July and the week before that the top 10 selling 3DS games.
Looking at the top 10 bestselling games for the PlayStation Vita, updated to the week ending August 10, 2013, two games were released in 2011 and eight in 2012. The two games released in 2011 were launch titles in Japan when the handheld launched in December 2011. The handheld also launched in North America and Europe in February 2012. Of the eight games released in 2012 two were released in February, one in May, one in June, one in September, and three in November.
The two titles released in 2011 have sold a combined 1,363,483 units or 681,742 units on average per title. The eight titles released in 2012 have sold a combined 3,883,049 units or 485,381 units on average per title. The two titles released in February 2012 have sold a combined 783,853 units or 391,927 units on average per title. The three titles released in November 2012 have sold a combined 1,854,479 units or 618,159 units on average per title.
The top 10 bestselling PlayStation Vita games have sold a combined 5,246,532 units. No title has crossed the one million mark at retail. However, the bestselling title, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, is only a matter of weeks of being the first Vita title to achieve this milestone. The top three titles have sold more than 500,000 units each and the top 10 titles have sold more than 300,000 units each.
Looking at sales by publisher, three of the titles are first party, published by Sony, while seven are third party. Of the third party titles, two were published by Electronic Arts, two by Ubisoft, one by Activision, and one by Atlus, and one by Warner Bros.
The three titles published by Sony sold a combined 1,806,525 units or 34.4 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Electronic Arts titles sold a combined 810,811 units or 15.5 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Ubisoft titles sold a combined 1,057,922 units or 20.2 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.
The top 10 selling games in July 2013 really shows how Uncharted has become one of the biggest exclusive franchises for Sony. Uncharted: Golden Abyss is not only the bestselling game for the Vita, but will cross one million units sold at retail in a matter of weeks.
Here are the sales outside the top 10: Sony has sold 5,550,359 million PlayStation Vita’s to date. There have also been 13,952,439 games sold for the PlayStation Vita.
The top 12 selling Vita games have sold more than 300,000 units to date and the top 23 have sold more than 200,000 units. The top 45 games have sold more than 100,000 units and the top 81 have sold more than 50,000 units.
Sony has sold the most games for the PlayStation Vita, with 4m053m441 games sold. Ubisoft is the biggest third party publisher with 1,463,028 games sold. Electronic Arts has sold 1,318,166 games for the Vita, Activision 759,599 games, Namco Bandai 727,912 units, Warner Bros. 720,488 games, Sega 654,071 games, Atlus 609,471 games, and Konami 512,543 games.
Action is by far the biggest genre for the Vita with nearly half of all the games sold. There have been 6,193,458 action games sold, 1,865,144 RPG’s sold, 1,640,517 sport games sold, 1,013,233 racing games sold and 1,012,388 platform games sold.
