E3 2011 Hands-On: Turtle Beach Headsets - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 08 June 2011 / 5,369 Views

Turtle Beach has long been considered the industry leader in gaming headsets. This title isn't just on PC, but also extends to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Turtle Beach was in full force on the show floor of E3 this year showing off some well-known and some only recently announced gaming headsets for all three platforms.

Turtle Beach Z6A

First we took a look at the Z6A. This new headset was just announced for E3 and is for the PC gamer looking to frag without waking the kids. The headset offers four speakers in each cup for 5.1 surround sound. The sound was quite good, particularly for the $99.99 price point, which is mid- to low-end for Turtle Beach. The bass was very clear thanks to the 30mm subs in each cup. It features a quickconnect cable for easy attachment/detachment and can also be adapted to Xbox 360 with a cable accessory kit.

Turtle Beach XL1

Next up was the XL1. This is a headset for the Xbox 360 specifically designed to give customers great sound at an affordable price level. This is the new entry-point for Turtle Beach headsets for Xbox 360 that offers both communication and game audio. It plugs into the Xbox 360 controller for in-game communication and also to the Xbox 360 via USB for power. That cable features in in-line amplifier for volume control at your fingertips. The sound was much better than most headsets in its $39.95 price point, but this is definitely the low end Turtle Beach, featuring less speakers and only a bass boost instead of subwoofers.

Turtle Beach XP500

Finally, heading up their lineup at E3 2011 was the much-anticipated XP500, the Xbox 360 companion to the much-hailed PX5 for the PlayStation 3. The XP500 is a bluetooth wireless, 7.1 surround sound headset. The base connects to the Xbox 360 via digital optical cable, but provides a pass through so it can then still output to your TV or sound system. To accommodate Xbox 360's unique in-controller communications, a bluetooth dongle plugs into the bottom of the Xbox 360 controller which provides wireless communication. The headset can also be synced with a bluetooth cellular phone or bluetooth-capable MP3 player so you can listen to music and recieve calls...all while gaming. It also features the PX5's custom presets, including access to downloadable presets created by some game creators. This headset will set you back $269.95, but it sounds phenomenal and is the top of the line for Turtle Beach and all gaming headsets.

So how about it? Will you be running out to grab any of the new Turtle Beach headsets? While no headset can ever match up to a high-end surround sound system, Turtle Beach certainly comes as close as anybody.

The PX5 is a good headset but nonetheless my Wireless Astro A40's eat Turtle Beaches for breakfast and with 5.8 connection than 2.4, there is really no comparison to that!
