The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and Switch.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

There is not detailed data for the ps2.

in this web. But technically you could get the PS2 official distributed machines and do some graphic for PS2. Maybe even with quarters sells.
And for sure it would be interesting.

Yea PS5 is targeting 100-115 while Switch will be doing 155-162

That's only possible if Nintendo decides to continue its production when Switch2 launches.
I have my doubts about that.

Your doubts don't equate to historical precedence or good business sense. Even the 3DS sold 9 million after the launch of Switch and that had far less momentum. Switch sales Even this late in its life cycle exceed the Series consoles. As long as the demand is there Nintendo will continue to produce units until such times as it isn't financially worthwhile and/or it impacts Switch 2s ability to succeed. If Switch 1 matches DS sales by summer 2025, then selling another 6 million within 18 months to outdo PS2 is very achievable.

My doubts are about Nintendo with a backwards compatibility machine.
i would like Nintendo cut Switch price and continue to sell it, but for diferent reasons, like need of full production capacity for Switch 2 (for example) they maybe will not.

And by summer 2025 Sony will tell you PS2 sold 170 millions, not 160.
270 millions by summer 2026.
1 trillion by 2027.

They can't as they've produced a commemorative plaque that defines the total units of PS2 ever produced during its production run as 160.6 million units. Hence the execs saying over 160 mill and not over 161 mill. So its set in stone now.

I'll see them doing another plaque, no problem XD.

Sources suggest mass production of Switch 2 has begun from at least November. This could point to a January reveal:

I knew they were gonna wait till after Xmas. Been saying that for months

But Switch will hit “the cliff” soon and PS5 will pass it 😄

Absolutley! Next week the Switch will be down 75% YoY! PS5 will be up YoY again next year thanks to the PS5 "exclusive GTAVI" (won't even be out on PC), and Switch will be lucky to hit even 1 million discontinued in february🤣.
No jokes aside... i do not see a cliff but a mountain on wich Switch is snowboarding. And instead of rolling down fast like a snowball, it needs skisticks to acelerate.😃
I think thats a fitting explanation.

Agreed. But it’s a big mountain Switch climbed, with a very distant slope that Switch has been skiing on since the top of 2021, and still has a long way to go. Might even be a couple of years past the release of Switch 2, and there may be a nice lift back up the mountain a little if Nintendo decides to pull the price reduction trigger.

I don't understand why you got downvoted, you did nothing more as stating the most likley scenario. But we already know we will soon start walking in a warzone if the Switch enters the 155- 162 million zone, for obvious reasons.☢️☢️☢️☠️☠️☠️

As long as theres decent software support from Nintendo for Switch 1 throughout 2025 then it will outsell PS2 by the end of 2026 at the latest. By summer 2025 it'll probably have 5 to 6 million to go to outdo the 160.6 the PS2 sold.

  • +1
killer7 Scoopz (on 05 December 2024)

The exact number of the PS2 is quite debatable for obvious reasons. If Switch lands in the 160 million area, even if it passes 160,6 million there will still be debates if it passed it because of a redicolous reddid post. I do not say it will pass it- absolutley not but if the Switch gets in the DS ballpark and sells ~ 6 million next year, PS2 would be a lock.

Scoopz killer7 (on 06 December 2024)

There's a plaque that Sony produced to commemorate the PS2s success that has a figure of 160,636, 885 units produced between Jan 2000 and Mar 2013. Former Sony exec Shawn Laysen commented on the pic and said this plaque and the figure were indeed legitimate. If Sony had sold 161 mill and above they would've said over 161. So Sonys official confirmation of over 160 mill, plus the existence of this plaque and its endorsement by Shawn means it's a defensible figure to run with. So if Switch ships 160.7 mill in its time Nintendo can claim victory. I have confidence. It just needs to match DS by summer 2025. Then within 18 months of that it's a done deal

Even IF the Switch sold that number (i do not say it will- just that its a possibility) Sony will move the goalpost again to 165 million. I don't understand why there are so many fanboys believing these lies. But lets not start this again. Some people seem to be learnresistat.

Scoopz killer7 (on 07 December 2024)

They can't move the goal posts again as the plaque confirms the exact number of units actually made so the sales number can never be higher. That's what's so good about this confirmation. You can't sell more than you've produced.
