VGChartz Methodology: Hardware estimates are based on retail sampling and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This typically allows us to produce figures that end up being within 10% of the actual totals.
This data is regularly compared against official shipment figures released by the console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with greater market coverage than ourselves. We then update our own estimates to bring them into line with those figures. This can result in frequent changes often within a short space of time, but we feel it's important to prioritise accuracy over consistency.
Note that our estimates are based on sell-through data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases the figures released by console manufacturers are based on shipment data (sell-in), where as soon as a device has left the factory and entered the supply chain for delivery it is considered a sale. This is why there is always a difference between the companies’ figures (sell-in) and VGChartz estimates (sell-through), even after we’ve made adjustments. The one exception to that is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining stock has finally sold out – at that point the figures will match.

It’s astonishing to see the ratio between PlayStation and Xbox in the Americas from how it used to be back in the PS3/Xbox360 era to PS4/Xbox One and now with PS5 selling almost double the amount of Xbox Series X/S there!
It is.
October last year, PS5 stood at 45m units globally, and Xbox Series at 24. It wasn't a 2:1.
And now in even less than 12 months, PS5 was able to get past that 2:1 ratio already.
Which of course was also caused by these massive drops the Series suffered from.
Right now, it looks like PS5 outsold Xbox Series 4 or even 5:1 globally in 2024. And PS5 is only half through its lifecycle.
I actually also believe (and calculated) that the Series is a bit overtracked in units sold. There was even a number shared recently that it had just shipped 28m as of June or July.
I personally guesstimate Series sell-through numbers are around 27.2m to 29.2m as of October, 2024.
The supposed figure of 28.3mil comes from as of June 2024 (https://finance.yahoo.com/news/xbox-series-x-sales-reportedly-180438647.html). Xbox sales were around 21mil during June 2023 (as reported directly by Microsoft), so 7mil increase over 12 month span. The estimate VGChartz provides of ~30mil sold does seem a slight bit higher than one might expect, but 27mil is a pretty massive stretch lol. Maybe 29.5mil is a better guess? (Though I kinda feel like the ppl behind VGChartz would know better than I...so I tend to trust their figures as a fair estimate.)
Thanks for sharing the link!
So, IF the Series stood at 28.3m units shipped at end of June, where would the sell-through figure be at the end of June?
I don't think at 27.3m, because that would be too close to shipments. I'd find 26.3m sell-through more possible, maybe even a bit slower.
But let's go with 26.3m units sell-through sold as of June, 2024.
Series sold 435k+266k+293k from July to September, that's 994k. Let's say a million.
That would mean 27.3m sell-through as of September, 2024.
IF these shipment numbers were true (which was also something my own calculations supported), there's no way Series consoles have crossed that 30m units mark yet.
These massive drops were too heavy over the past 19 months to get the Series above 30m. At least that's what I claim.
Looking further into the 28.3mil figure, it does seem Aldora Intellegence is a highly reputable source...so let's assume it to be true. Then yes, it appears VGChartz is overestimating XBSX by >1mil. Typically sell-through will be 1-1.5mil less than shipped (as can be seen with PS5 and (according to NSW estimates provided by VGChartz) NSW, for instance), hence XBSX likely had sold through >27.0mil as of June 31, 2024. (Won't quite be -1.5mil since XBSX moves far less units than NSW & PS5.) Following VGChartz estimates, worst case scenario XBSX sits at 28.0mil sell-through, with a more realistic estimate placing the system in mid-28mil territory as of September 31st, 2024.
In any case, as far as I can see, it appears you may be correct in your claim that XBSX is a bit overtracked by VGChartz atm.
Yep, it indeed is a reliable source. It definitely ain't no backyard rumor.
I gotta tell you: looking at these drops throughout the past 19 months, Xbox Series had only one (!) month being up year-on-year. This was September '23 iirc.
I truly don't think Series consoles have crossed that 30m treshold yet. Which is supported by this 28.3m units shipped figure at the end of June, 2024.
I don't blame anyone, since Microsoft still isn't sharing any numbers at all.
But it makes sense why they haven't. Because Series consoles, even as of October '24, still haven't reached that 30m mark.
And Series consoles won't reach 40m. That's my personal guesstimation.
We'll see what effect ps5 pro and black friday will have on ps5 next month. How is the ps5 doing against the ps4 in the americas?
